Approximately 90% of the prototype’s cost will come from the United States and its partner countries. Luckey has stated that his long-term goal is to have a complete American supply chain that includes displays, metals, and everything else, including items currently manufactured in foreign facilities.

To make them compatible with American production capacity, the engineers had to go back and rework several aspects. They chose metals that the US industry can produce in large quantities, modified the battery and power systems to fit with what was available here, and developed a bonding procedure for display glass manufactured in the United States. That’s all to make the device tough enough for outdoor use while remaining buildable right here. It also helped prevent the design from becoming overly convoluted.

Luckey has described these machines as devices in which the owner has complete control over all of the hardware and software that runs on them. He used his own BlueChip prototype to run some local models on sensitive information that cannot be transferred to the cloud, which is exactly what government and military customers require when they want tight control over their data. All that being said, the tough build adds some weight and reduces battery life when compared to a typical commercial laptop, and the price is likely to be 20% higher than what you’d spend for a high-end personal computer.

People who don’t require all of the extra security elements are likely to find that a traditional alternative is far less expensive, according to Luckey. However, BlueChip’s primary focus is on defense and critical-industry customers, who value supply chain transparency and indigenous production. Anduril and Qualcomm are funding this project themselves; there are no government subsidies, and the partnerships they are forming with vendors and manufacturing procedures will all benefit future BlueChip products.

Putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together to restart full-fledged computer manufacturing in the United States will necessitate a considerable increase in production of circuit boards, screens, batteries, and other specialized parts that are currently largely imported. BlueChip initiates that process with a viable product and provides the framework for future domestic capacity expansion.

<div style="display: grid;
