Assistant Professor Tural Khudiyev and his team at the College of Design and Engineering threaded electronic fibers into the forearm of a sleeve, creating the first full-color, touch-sensitive display that can be woven the way yarn is woven. A laser creates small precise holes in very thin insulated wires, and a sophisticated method known as surface wetting is used to direct molten solder into attaching only where it should. The end result is a multilayer fiber that is one millimeter thick and ten meters long, with almost 5,000 chips and 20,000 connections. One layer below the LEDs is a sensor that detects pressure; when you press your finger on the fiber, the circuit closes and the nearest LED glows. The screen updates at 30 frames per second and features 8-bit color. There are extra fibers woven in that carry a microphone, a speaker, and a variety of other goodies such as a compass and motion sensors, so the sleeve can do a variety of tasks such as run a calculator, display your photo gallery, and even play video (though it slows down to 25 frames per second when attempting to sync audio). It can also show you the temperature of your surroundings or operate as a voice assistant, and if you insert one of those temperature fibers under your arm, it can even scan your body temperature and display the result.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.techeblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/23231043\/garmentgui-touchscreen-garment-sweather-clothes-2.jpg\" alt=\"Garment GUI Touchscreen Garment Sweater Clothes\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><br \/>The good news is that after 50 standard washing machine cycles and a thousand bends about a five-millimeter radius, the brightness and touch response appear to be fine. The same goes for air moving through the fabric, which appears to be as simple as flowing through cotton, polyester, or denim. The materials in the sleeve are all well within safe limits for skin contact. A garment equipped with fiber sensors might detect a wide range of physiological signals and allow the wearer to check or even respond to them just by touching the fabric. If combined with on-device processing, it might provide a wide range of personal monitoring and feedback without the need for a separate screen. That same platform could also house a variety of different types of interactions that are only possible when you have a display and sensors embedded in your regular clothing.
