The first partner went live in 10 weeks, and the time the team got back went into retail questions, including which products to list in the apps and whether the pricing was right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dhillon, vice-president of enterprise data and AI at Sobeys, told that story on stage at Snowflake World Tour in Toronto in September to make a point about where the holdup is now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re used to being the bottleneck,\u201d said Dhillon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When business teams wanted to move forward and technology lagged, the default assumption was that tech hadn\u2019t delivered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That has now flipped to the business, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause the technology is so much easier to use and so empowering, now it really becomes about \u2018Are our business teams ready for it?\u2019\u201d said Dhillon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of what changed was the technology underneath. Sobeys runs its data on Snowflake, the company hosting the event, and when Snowflake\u2019s Nav Anand asked how that had helped, Dhillon said the difference showed up in how her data engineers spend their time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They used to spend it keeping things running, fixing the connections that move data between Sobeys\u2019 systems and the systems themselves. Snowflake\u2019s platform is an off-the-shelf product that stores and processes a company\u2019s data, and Dhillon said it worked out of the box. Her engineers now spend that time on business problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I covered Snowflake Summit in San Francisco in June, the new AI tools on show needed a company\u2019s data pulled from scattered systems into one governed platform first. That\u2019s work many Canadian organizations still have to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Dhillon, the delivery launch showed the rest of the company there was \u201csomething going on here that can drive a real fundamental shift in terms of how we work.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-business-has-to-be-ready\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The business has to be ready<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dhillon assigns each technical team to one part of the company, so her engineers can learn that area\u2019s business problems in depth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI joke with our team all the time that we\u2019re not a technology team. We\u2019re retailers first,\u201d said Dhillon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Business teams and delivery teams now build side by side, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t the \u2018give me your requirements, lob them over the fence, and I will build it,\u2019\u201d said Dhillon. \u201cWe\u2019re really co-building together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether an AI tool makes it into daily use now depends on whether the team around it changes how the work gets done, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe technology productionization is not the challenge it used to be,\u201d said Dhillon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She wants the business on board from the start. Every big AI project at Sobeys has a business executive as its sponsor, a vice-president or senior vice-president from the part of the company that will use it, who backs the project and answers for it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe more [business teams] can understand it, the more that they can believe in it, the more they can see how their problems are going to get solved from the technology,\u201d said Dhillon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dhillon called it a balance. Sobeys gives people \u201cthe sandbox to play,\u201d she said, and its leaders decide which AI projects get funded based on which will show up on the bottom line. Sobeys\u2019 co-build model, with business and delivery teams working side by side, is one way to do that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think the technical times are compressing,\u201d said Kasiviswanathan. \u201cI think the human interaction time is something we just have to go with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He named three places where that human work can slow a project. The first is agreeing whether to build AI agents or buy them. The second is governance. He said companies need \u201ca very well-thought-out process about governance in this new day and age,\u201d and some are still applying rules \u201ccoming from the traditional database world or SaaS world in the past.\u201d The third is an experimentation culture that lets teams \u201cdo things in a smaller way\u201d and move faster, which is what Dhillon\u2019s sandbox is for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf those three things work very well, I think things move faster,\u201d said Kasiviswanathan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His governance point fits with what Caitlin Halferty, head of data and analytics at Thomson Reuters, told me this summer, that governing data early let her company move faster on AI.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Snowflake-world-tour-Bala-Kasiviswanathan-1200x675.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3869403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Snowflake-world-tour-Bala-Kasiviswanathan-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Snowflake-world-tour-Bala-Kasiviswanathan-800x450.png 800w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Snowflake-world-tour-Bala-Kasiviswanathan-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Snowflake-world-tour-Bala-Kasiviswanathan-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Snowflake-world-tour-Bala-Kasiviswanathan.png 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bala Kasiviswanathan, Snowflake\u2019s vice-president of AI and developer experience, speaks at Snowflake World Tour in Toronto. \u2014 Photo by Digital Journal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"h-speed-depends-on-the-organization\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speed depends on the organization<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 10 days before we spoke, Kasiviswanathan had met two financial services customers at opposite ends of the adoption spectrum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One bank wanted to move everything onto Snowflake\u2019s data platform before trying AI. Another financial customer wanted to go \u201cvery aggressive\u201d and give its AI agents context from across the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said plenty of customers sit somewhere in between.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regulated industries can be slower by nature, he added, and the tight controls over data that drew them to Snowflake are part of the reason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are always the trusted governed platform,\u201d said Kasiviswanathan. \u201cSo the strength is also sometimes the slowness that comes in, because these industries chose us because that\u2019s what they wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I pointed out that both examples were financial, he took the point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think you\u2019re right to observe that,\u201d said Kasiviswanathan. \u201cI do not want to do the cliche like financial industry is always slow, or public sector is always slow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speed may come down to \u201cthe leader and the culture and the DNA of the organization,\u201d he said, along with how willing a company is to change the way it works.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He called Canadian customers \u201ca mixed bag\u201d and held up the Sobeys story from the keynote as an example from the fast end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are customers who are doing almost as innovative, or sometimes even more innovative than what I see in the U.S.,\u201d said Kasiviswanathan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I heard two different reads on Canada that day. On stage that morning, Dhillon, whose team got its first delivery partner live in 10 weeks, had pointed to the numbers that put Canada behind its peers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs Canadian leaders, I also hear the stats of how Canada is lagging behind a lot of the adoption and innovation versus other peer countries. And so I would also challenge this room to think bigger, and to think bolder,\u201d said Dhillon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She asked companies to use AI to challenge their business models as well as the processes they already run. Her own 10 weeks suggest the technology is ready for that, which leaves Canadian leaders with the question she raised earlier: are the business teams ready?<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-final-shots\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final shots<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An organization moves at the speed of its decisions. Someone still has to decide what to build, how the work changes and who owns the result.<\/li>\n<li>When technical work shrinks from months to weeks, business readiness sets the timeline.<\/li>\n<li>Canada\u2019s adoption question may come down to whether leaders are prepared to change how their companies work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
