To a point.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWhat is it supposed to do?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAI things.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWhat can it do?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe\u2019re not sure yet.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWhat can\u2019t it do?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cLet\u2019s be clear. What won\u2019t it do?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe have no idea.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWhat doesn\u2019t it do?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to find out.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There, in 60 words of very mildly extrapolated 2400-year-old human logic, is the problem. Plato and Xenophon, please excuse the extreme lack of sophistication. This just isn\u2019t a very sophisticated time in human thought. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI can now be described as a third party to human logic, science, and basic comprehension on any subject, the ultimate \u201cwhatever\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In science, a third wheel might be a more apt description. Part of the problem is defining who manages the logic of AI behaviour in science.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-ai-in-real-science-is-a-very-different-thing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI in real science is a very different thing<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI in science, particularly in the field of discoveries, is subject to the same peer review processes, critiques, and afterthoughts as human science. This form of AI has nothing in common with gratuitous chatbots and folksy tech sales spiels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AI discoveries are now continuous<\/strong> and in large quantities. these vast volumes of new data are a real burden. That\u2019s putting a lot of pressure on the scientific review process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>As if fraudulent human scientific papers weren\u2019t enough of a millstone<\/strong>, AI work has to be reviewed meticulously. That\u2019s expensive and time-consuming for researchers and the mainstream science business as a whole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the question of \u201cwho cleans up after AI\u201d comes into play. There are some interesting developments in this area, intentionally and\/or otherwise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>According to Stanford Medicine<\/strong>, whole texts can be turned into AI agents which can discuss and collaborate. This very good idea could be easily turned into a self-audit process, identifying areas of agreement and disagreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach is getting desperately needed extra teeth and capacity with <strong>Google Deep Review<\/strong>, a dedicated verification platform. Deep Review has credentials across 16,000 actual deployments and is now launching publicly. Deep Review is specifically tasked with managing the gigantic volumes of materials for review, and this really is a \u201cjust-in-time\u201d moment.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-but-of-course-there-s-a-but\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cBut\u2026?\u201d Of course, there\u2019s a \u201cbut\u201d.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healthy and necessary as the cross-referencing agents and Deep Review are, there\u2019s a built-in caveat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AI can, by definition, be scripted.<\/strong> Any \u201cscientific finding\u201d created purely to prove a point can be ready-made by a few prompts. In theory, you can \u201cprove\u201d that the Moon is made of Gruy\u00e8re with a script. Scripts are relatively easy to spot, but they\u2019re still wasteful when used for such motives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Devoting resources to a scientific game of automated Whack-a-Mole leaves a lot to be desired.<\/strong> It\u2019s hard to believe that the fraud factories will just shut up shop and go back to health insurance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>At what point does the review process tell \u201cspurious science\u201d where to go?<\/strong> There will need to be clear cutoff points for scientific drivel. It would be nice if the cutoff process were sufficiently ferocious to deter the time-wasters and fakes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pure research is a special case.<\/strong> Pure research is quite capable of turning up new data and new information that is hard to cross-check simply because it\u2019s so new. Automated reviews would need to refer upwards to human scrutiny. It\u2019s still a filter, but a careful filter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Commercial research is vulnerable to fraud and self-seeking findings.<\/strong> This issue could be \u201cpainful but valuable\u201d. The <strong>quality of research is critical, and the \u201cpaper mills\u201d need to be exterminated<\/strong>. It\u2019s reasonable to assume that commercial researchers could put strict guidelines on inputs, particularly AI inputs, to ensure proper referencing for citations, supporting evidence, etc. \u201cZero trust\u201d has to be the unavoidable bottom line for researchers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There\u2019s also the issue of \u201cjust plain wrong\u201d to consider.<\/strong> One of the problems with AI in general and AI agents in particular is their sourcing. Let\u2019s leave out the issues of lousy AI management and vague sloppy guidelines and focus on whether information is correct. <strong>AI is perfectly capable of getting things completely wrong<\/strong> both in process and in output. The cleanup process needs to start there.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-meanwhile-back-at-socrates\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meanwhile, back at Socrates<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The argument continues:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cHow do you define AI\u2019s truths and falsehoods?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cTo the best of our ability.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIs that adequate?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe have no way of knowing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone else see some room for improvement in the replies?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Suggestion:<\/strong> Be as rigorous and demanding as possible for AI outputs.
