Announced back in March during the agency’s Ignition event, the mission pairs a compact reactor with hardware already under construction for the canceled lunar Gateway station. That reuse lets engineers hit the next Mars transfer window instead of waiting years for a clean-sheet design.

A nuclear power module is located at the far end of a long boom and serves as the vehicle’s heart. Idaho National Laboratory is currently building the reactor, which will burn high-assay low-enriched uranium dioxide fuel behind a protective layer of boron carbide. To be extra safe, the reactor remains idle until the spaceship has left Earth orbit, and then stays that way for the most dangerous phase of the voyage, all in an effort to keep any radioactive material dormant. When the reactor is turned on, it produces more than 20 kilowatts of electricity, which is sufficient to power the system for a whole year.

            LEGO Icons NASA Artemis Space Launch System – DIY Rocket Model Building Set for Adults, Ages 18+ – Gifts…

NASA rocket model kit – Launch into a creative project with the LEGO Icons NASA Artemis Space Launch System model building project for adult space…

What’s in the box? – This creative building set includes everything you need to craft a multistage rocket with 2 solid-fuel boosters, an Orion…

Features and Functions – This NASA-themed rocket model features retractable launch tower umbilicals, rocket support and crew bridge, detachable…

On October 20th, NASA confirmed that Sierra Lobo will supply the closed Brayton-cycle converter that converts reactor heat into useful power. Inside the converter, a working gas expands through a turbine and runs a generator before cooling off with radiators and restarting the process. They’ll be working on it under an existing spaceflight development contract at the Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, where the finished converter will be connected to the Idaho reactor to complete the module. According to program director Steve Sinacore, this arrangement significantly reduces technical risks while keeping us on pace for a 2028 launch.

Photo credit: NASA | Alberto Bertolin
The electricity generated by that module will be routed into the Power and Propulsion Element, which was designed specifically for the Gateway project. The element already has four 6-kilowatt Busek Hall thrusters and three 12-kilowatt Advanced Electric Propulsion System thrusters designed in collaboration with Aerojet Rocketdyne. Those thrusters ionize xenon and then utilize magnetic fields to blast it out with far greater efficiency than chemical rockets, although producing just a moderate amount of thrust. Furthermore, the continual low thrust over a long period of time allows a spaceship to modify its trajectory in ways that chemical stages just cannot keep up with, even while the propellant amount is fixed.

When it ultimately launches, the SR-1 Freedom will lift off from Earth’s gravity well and start the reactor within 48 hours. It will then continue its voyage to Mars, which will include two flybys rather than just entering orbit. Between the boom and the propulsion bus is an entry capsule containing the SkyFall payload, which consists of three miniature helicopters derived from the Ingenuity design that successfully flew 72 times on Mars. These small rotorcraft will contain cameras, ground-penetrating radar, and communications to help determine where to land and whether there is any subsurface water ice that future workers may want to use.

Photo credit: NASA | Alberto Bertolin
All of this contributes to a far bigger effort to complete Lunar Reactor-1, the surface power system that NASA hopes to have operational for a Moon outpost by 2030. By flying the reactor first, without the added complexity of landing it, they can have the fuel, converters, and control systems up and working in deep space before attempting the same technology on the lunar surface. There was a previous space-reactor program that invested decades and billions of dollars but never made it out of Earth orbit after the 1965 SNAP-10A launch. The SR-1 is the first step toward finally reducing this gap, while simultaneously establishing the industrial infrastructure required for larger reactors in the future.

<div style="display: grid;
