Cars pulled over. Phone cameras came out. Speculation ran from military exercises to something far stranger. Officials later confirmed the source sat on the ground along Horseshoe Meadows Road, where a California company had parked powerful spotlights for a controlled experiment.

Reflect Orbital is on a quest to launch enormous mirrors into space on satellites so that when the sun goes below the horizon, it can simply beam sunlight onto locations on Earth that need it. The service, known as “sunlight on tap,” is useful for search and rescue operations in the middle of nowhere, as well as keeping solar farms running until the evening. Still, no satellite has been launched. They recently tested a mock-up. On October 10, the team brought in some ground lights and ran them from approximately 7 p.m. to midnight to get a sense of what it might be like in orbit.

    Sale

            Govee RGBIC Floor Lamp Basic, 1000lm LED Corner Lamp, Black | Compatible with Alexa and Matter, Modern…

Note: This floor lamp is 53.7 inches tall and offers a maximum brightness of 1,000 lumens, making it best suited for corners and small spaces. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office calls in all-volunteer search and rescue teams. They put them through certain workouts in the dark and under artificial lights. Phillip Cash, operations leader, told reporters that the light they were working with was somewhat brighter than a full moon and that searchers could see for roughly 3 miles in all directions. He claimed that with the increased light, uneven ground became less difficult to maneuver, though he admitted that the crew was already rather effective at nite without it.

This Lone Pine test, according to the company, is a step in the right path for the larger concept. The FCC gave the go-ahead this spring for the Eärendil-1 experimental satellite, which has an 18-meter reflector on board. They also secured two slots on an Indian rocket to launch future spacecraft, which will fly alongside other items on a US rocket. However, until those satellites reach space, these ground tests are the only real-world data we have on how all of this might truly play out.

Locals had various reactions, with some being shocked and curious. A few others described the light as blinding and wondered why they hadn’t been told about it earlier. The test site was very far out in the sticks, so you’d think it wouldn’t be an issue, but the light allegedly carried quite well, and some people saw it from a distance. The rescue workers who participated in the trial saw it as valuable practice rather than a lasting change in how they execute their jobs. Cash hedged his bets on whether this will be a game changer for how they conduct normal missions.

Future orbital missions will still have to demonstrate that they can deliver the goods without disrupting people, wildlife, or the nite sky. For the time being, however, the October experiment demonstrated that directed light from a distance can help trained responders navigate through the dark desert nite. The next phase will be to collect genuine data from satellites rather than just lights on a mountain road.
[Source]

<div style="display: grid;
