Jinlong Wang, a co-author of the study published in Environmental Science &amp; Technology, explained that the goal was just common sense: address the stink at its source, i.e. inside the bin, rather than allowing it to waft out of the house and into the street. This insert is rather simple because it is translucent, enabling air to pass through while also allowing light to reach the catalytic layer behind. It can collect acetic acid and begin dissolving its bonds when exposed to light. To give it an edge, the team was able to obtain some lab results by ionically bonding lithium to the oxide, essentially creating a more advanced version of the catalyst that outperformed both plain manganese oxide and activated carbon in lab tests conducted under simulated sunlight. The lithium addition produces oxygen sites that are essentially lying there waiting for some light to come along and break water molecules, resulting in some groups that subsequently react with the acetic acid. Light performs two functions here: it heats the surface and rearranges the electrons, allowing the process to proceed without the need for a fancy electrical heater. You know what? The catalyst simply kept operating, breaking down the acetic acid created by the trash. The data revealed that it was not a one-time response, as they were seeing a consistent, continual reduction in acid, even when compared to a bin that had not been treated at all. Just for good measure, the substance remained steady throughout the entire period. The lab results had already shown complete acid degradation with only moderate light intensities, so the outdoor test was essentially confirming that the same chemistry still works just fine when you add real food, changing weather, and all of the temperature swings that come with it.<\/p>\n<p>The insert requires no wiring or power, and it can be simply added to any existing bins without changing the shape of the bin or the collection schedule. Now, performance is dependent on sunshine reaching that lens, so if the bin is placed in a shady area or the skies get overcast for an extended period of time, the reaction will slow down. Having said that, the design still provides an excellent means to eliminate the most potent odors, particularly during the warmer months when the bins are more likely to be sitting outside in the first place.
