Increasingly, it is also changing how people view experts. A new survey conducted by AI platform Use.AI suggests that many individuals are becoming more willing to question professional advice after consulting artificial intelligence tools, a trend that raises important questions about trust, expertise and decision-making in the digital age.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the survey of 15,428 adults, 64 percent of respondents said they feel more confident challenging professional advice after using AI. More than half (53 percent) reported using AI to check a professional\u2019s explanation before deciding whether they agree with it. Meanwhile, 46 percent said that professional credentials alone carry less value than they once did. The effect appears particularly pronounced among younger adults, with 70 percent of respondents aged 18 to 34 reporting greater comfort in questioning professional advice, compared with 49 percent of adults aged 45 and above. Use.AI has described this phenomenon as an \u201cexpertise recession\u201d, reflecting a weakening of automatic deference to professional authority.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-democratization-of-information\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The democratization of information<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For centuries, expertise has often depended on unequal access to information. Doctors possessed specialist medical knowledge. Lawyers understood legal systems. Scientists and engineers possessed technical information unavailable to most people. Digital technologies began to alter this relationship through search engines and online databases. AI may now be accelerating that trend. Large language models such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini allow people to ask complex questions and receive immediate explanations. Topics that previously required lengthy research can be summarised in seconds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Use.AI co-founder and chief executive Ihor Herasymov: \u201cAI has democratised confidence faster than it has democratised knowledge.\u201d This distinction is important. Access to information does not necessarily equate to understanding that information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the key aspects of the survey is that it measures confidence rather than ability. A person who consults an AI tool before speaking with a doctor, accountant or engineer may feel more informed. However, whether that individual possesses sufficient expertise to evaluate a complex professional judgement is an entirely different matter. This issue has parallels with a well-established psychological phenomenon known as the Dunning-Kruger effect, where individuals with limited knowledge may overestimate their understanding of a subject.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI systems can potentially amplify this challenge. For example, generative AI frequently provides answers in a highly confident style. The responses are often fluent, coherent and persuasive, regardless of whether the information is entirely correct. Consequently, users may develop increased confidence in their own assessment of a topic, even when they lack specialist training. This creates a paradox. AI can genuinely help people understand complex issues, yet it can also create an illusion of expertise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey also found a substantial generational divide. Younger adults were significantly more likely to report feeling comfortable questioning professional advice after using AI. Several factors may contribute to this. First, younger generations tend to be more familiar with digital technologies. They are accustomed to obtaining information online, comparing sources and conducting independent research. Second, younger adults have grown up during a period characterised by declining trust in traditional institutions. Social media platforms have encouraged individuals to evaluate competing viewpoints rather than accepting information from a single authoritative source. Artificial intelligence fits naturally into this environment. Instead of consulting only one expert, users can rapidly generate alternative explanations, compare viewpoints and seek additional context. The result is a shift in how authority is perceived.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-benefits-of-asking-questions\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The benefits of asking questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Questioning professional advice is not inherently negative. In many situations, informed questioning can improve outcomes. Patients who better understand medical treatments may be more engaged in care decisions. Consumers who scrutinise financial products may avoid poor investments. Organisations that challenge assumptions may make better strategic decisions. AI can facilitate this process by helping users formulate questions, understand terminology and identify areas where further clarification is required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In scientific fields, critical questioning is essential. Science progresses by testing hypotheses and examining evidence rather than accepting claims at face value. Viewed from this perspective, AI could help create more informed and engaged individuals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The risks arise when confidence becomes disconnected from expertise. Many professions require years of education, training and practical experience. A surgeon, pharmaceutical scientist or structural engineer develops judgement not only through knowledge acquisition but through repeated exposure to complex real-world situations. AI cannot instantly transfer this accumulated professional experience to users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, AI systems sometimes generate inaccurate information, commonly referred to as &#8220;hallucinations.&#8221; Although modern models continue to improve, errors remain possible. A user who challenges professional advice based on incorrect AI-generated information may ultimately make poorer decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healthcare provides a particularly important example. AI tools can help patients understand medical terminology and prepare questions for consultations. However, they cannot replace clinical assessment, diagnostic testing or specialist decision-making. The same principle applies in law, finance, engineering and other highly specialised disciplines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than viewing AI as a threat, professionals may need to adapt to a changing information landscape. Clients, patients and customers increasingly arrive at consultations with information gathered from AI platforms. Professionals who dismiss these sources entirely may struggle to build rapport. Conversely, those who help individuals understand where AI can be useful and where its limitations lie may strengthen trust. This, in turn, may require a shift in communication strategies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts can no longer assume their conclusions will be accepted purely because of credentials. Instead, they may need to explain reasoning more transparently and engage more actively with questions generated through AI-assisted research.
