Yet its expansion comes with an increasingly significant environmental bill. The International Energy Agency expects electricity consumption by data centres to more than double by 2030, reaching around 945 terawatt-hours. AI is identified as the most important driver of this growth, alongside increasing demand for other digital services. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This creates an awkward question for companies that have simultaneously committed themselves to ambitious climate targets. Can organisations continue to expand computationally intensive AI systems while reducing the environmental impact of their operations? The answer increasingly depends not simply on buying greener technology, but on knowing what an organisation is consuming and emitting in the first place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Environmental, social and governance programmes depend upon reliable information. Organisations need sufficiently robust data to establish baselines, measure consumption and emissions, determine whether interventions are working and demonstrate progress to stakeholders. The parallel with AI is notable. Poor data foundations can also obstruct artificial intelligence projects. A Digital Journal examination of the AI data-readiness gap, for example, highlighted how fragmented, incompatible and insufficiently clean corporate information can prevent sophisticated models from delivering their intended value. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an important convergence here. Rather than treating sustainability data and AI infrastructure as separate technology challenges, organisations increasingly need to consider the quality, governance and efficiency of the underlying digital environment. The environmental consequences are becoming harder to overlook. Data centres accounted for about 1.5 per cent of global electricity consumption in 2024, according to figures reported from the IEA, with their electricity consumption having risen at approximately 12 per cent annually over the preceding five years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More recent analysis has also challenged assumptions about the sector\u2019s carbon footprint. Allianz Trade estimated that data centres emitted 286 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2025 and warned that, without power-grid decarbonisation, their emissions could more than double by 2030.  For corporate sustainability teams, consequently, digital transformation can no longer be considered environmentally weightless.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-hitachi-vantara-sets-2040-target\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hitachi Vantara sets 2040 target<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against this backdrop, Hitachi Vantara, the data-storage, infrastructure and hybrid-cloud management subsidiary of Hitachi, has announced a commitment to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its global value chain by fiscal year 2040. According to material supplied to Digital Journal, the company says its near- and long-term science-based emissions-reduction targets have been independently validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hitachi Vantara says it intends to reduce its absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse-gas emissions by 98 per cent by FY2030 against an FY2024 baseline. Its Scope 3 goals are expressed differently. The company is targeting a 51 per cent reduction in Scope 3 greenhouse-gas emissions per usable petabyte of storage capacity sold by FY2036, followed by a 97 per cent reduction on the same intensity basis by FY2040, compared with FY2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction matters. Scope 1 relates to emissions directly controlled by an organisation, while Scope 2 addresses emissions associated with purchased energy. Scope 3 captures emissions elsewhere in the value chain and can consequently be substantially more complicated for companies to measure and influence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hitachi Vantara says that in FY2025 it reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 43 per cent, largely driven by obtaining half of its energy from renewable sources. The targets are significant in another respect: the company sells the very infrastructure being placed under increased strain by enterprise AI.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-making-storage-part-of-the-equation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making storage part of the equation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Storage may receive less attention in debates around AI energy consumption than graphics processing units and processors, yet the rapid expansion of data means that storage efficiency forms part of the infrastructure sustainability question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hitachi Vantara says its approach includes lifecycle sustainability initiatives across its Virtual Storage Platform One portfolio, together with greater attention to greenhouse-gas governance, information quality and audit readiness. Its VSP 360 Clear Sight offering is intended to provide customers with information about energy consumption and carbon impact across VSP environments, alongside recommendations concerning operational efficiency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Customer examples supplied by Hitachi Vantara illustrate the potential scale of infrastructure savings, although they should be understood as company-reported case studies rather than universal results. Indian media organisation Malayala Manorama is reported to have reduced power and cooling costs by 70 per cent, together with a 66 per cent reduction in data-centre rack space. Turkish financial institution DestekBank, meanwhile, is reported to have cut data-centre energy consumption by 25 per cent and total cost of ownership by 20 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These examples point towards an important aspect of the AI sustainability debate. Increasing computing requirements do not necessarily translate directly into an equivalent increase in resource consumption if organisations can improve the utilisation and efficiency of their infrastructure. They do, however, make such efficiency improvements increasingly consequential.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-ai-s-sustainability-contradiction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI\u2019s sustainability contradiction<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI presents businesses with something of a double-edged environmental proposition. Machine learning potentially provides tools for optimising energy systems, manufacturing, logistics and other processes. The IEA itself describes AI as offering opportunities to reduce costs and emissions. Yet the computational infrastructure required to provide these capabilities creates additional electricity demand. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means simply attaching an AI programme to an existing environmental strategy is unlikely to be enough. Organisations need to consider where their data resides, how efficiently it is stored and processed, where electricity comes from and whether environmental measurements are sufficiently reliable to support meaningful decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another reason for doing so. Public scrutiny of AI infrastructure is increasing. Communities are raising questions about the electricity, water and physical infrastructure demanded by large data centres, turning what was once an obscure backend technology issue into a matter of wider environmental and political debate.  The next phase of corporate AI adoption may therefore be judged according to more than model performance, productivity gains and return on investment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
