On Tuesday in New York the covers came off the Type 01, a four-door grand tourer and the first production car on a platform Jaguar built only for itself. The name is a small piece of branding arithmetic. Aluminum dominates the structure, resulting in an almost flat shoulder and a hood that sticks far out past the front axle, and the side glass is so thin that the cabin resembles a slot. As you might expect, a drag figure of 0.23 has earned this car the title of the lowest ever for a Jaguar road car, thanks in large part to clever tricks such as front shutters, a rear spoiler that can be adjusted to sit between 7 and 21 degrees, and air springs that drop it by 0.6 inch at speeds above 65 mph. One aluminum panel per side extends 118 inches from the front pillar, across the glass roof, and back to the rear. Dana supplied the two rear motors, which add 416 horsepower each. Total output is 1,015 horsepower and 1,365 Newton-meters, or slightly more than 1,000 lb-ft, making this the most powerful road automobile the business has ever marketed. Officially, it takes 3.2 seconds to reach 60 mph, although some estimates in the United States say it can be reduced to a tenth of that time. The jump from 62 to 112 mph takes another 4 seconds, which is just crazy. Top speed is limited at 150 mph. Jaguar claims an EPA range of up to 400 miles; a more realistic WLTP figure is closer to 450, and sustained 75 mph cruising brings you closer to 320 miles. On a 350-kilowatt charger, they claim a rather impressive 200 miles in 13 minutes, or 10 to 80 percent in about 22 minutes. The pack may also function in tandem with older 400-volt devices, which is a useful feature. Two smaller portrait screens, each around 7 inches in size, control the climate and seats, one up front and one for the rear passengers. Forget physical switches; voice control is designed to fill the void. A floating console runs the length of the cabin, and a cloth-covered soundbar houses a Meridian speaker array as well as additional drivers in the headrests to help with noise. Don\u2019t get me wrong, rear room is somewhat of a tradeoff. The spec sheet states four doors and four seats, but in actuality, shorter passengers can get a good amount of space, and when packed up, the load shelf out back can only carry a few of checked bags rather than a true trunk. That\u2019s almost double what Jaguars have recently been selling for, and the idea is that it will appeal to folks who would otherwise consider a Porsche or a lower-end Bentley, perhaps someone looking for a little more luxury and a little less outright performance. Orders begin in early 2027. The same year, production moves to Solihull, with Wolverhampton supplying drive units and battery packs and Halewood supplying pressed panels. First, buyers should receive their vehicles in the latter half of 2027. JLR\u2019s CEO, PB Balaji, believes the car is a game changer, as it is a clone of nothing and the beginning of a whole new customer list.
