His latest project walks through that job on a working donor board, the one part he treats as non-negotiable. Almost everything else can come from current reproduction kits, so a battered shell and a tired screen do not end the project.

The original GBC hardware was a beast to own. The screen lacked a backlight, the tiny speaker was difficult to use, and the two AA cells that had powered the device from its inception had not been kind to the capacitors. After all of this time, they’re probably a little sketchy. Zac opens the unit with a tri-wing screwdriver, gently unlocks the screen connector, and then uses isopropyl alcohol to thoroughly clean the cartridge slot, gold contacts, and buttons, which were in desperate need after all these years. He replaces the sticky membrane with a new one and uses a color capacitor kit to clean out the old capacitors, more for prevention than cure, because let’s be honest, those parts were never supposed to live this long.

The transparent shell comes next, a pre-cut design that is both cosmetic and functional. Its window is larger than the original Nintendo one, and the battery divider has been removed, giving the new battery pack plenty of freedom to breathe while also providing a great view. The screen that fits into that window is a cut-down OLED display from a phone, and Zac had to cobble together a small translation board so that the Color motherboard could work with it, but once everything is in place, it boots up smoothly. He carefully angles the panel in, installs a small adhesive ring, runs a power wire from the power switch, and then tapes it all together using Kapton tape before adding the ribbon and insulation. There’s also adjustable brightness, a faux scan-line filter that may be enabled, and a color-changing launch logo. Games that used to fade away in bright sunshine can now sit lovely on a nice piece of actual glass, as the old reflective panel couldn’t manage such contrast.

Sound also receives some love. The original speaker is removed, a clear replacement is installed, and a flexible amp board is inserted into the audio circuit, which is intended to double the volume and detect when headphones are plugged in. However, to Zac’s dismay, it is still hissing during early tests. Further study reveals that the problem is due to voltage ripple, so he removes the old regulator components and replaces them with a Helder board that includes a correct solid-state cap. After that swap, the speaker becomes louder, and the background hiss fades away.

The power side of things begins to get really interesting, as it is no longer just a battery replacement and start-up, but a full-fledged power overhaul. The AA cells are replaced by a lithium pack with far more capacity and voltage, up to eight hours of gaming, and USB-C on the side. There’s also a wireless coil inside. The Helder regulator that powers the OLED, amp, and lights must be up to the task, which is why the first boot on the new pack failed but the second did not, since Zac did not want that to happen. To compensate for this, an RGB kit is installed, replacing the old single status LED. The individually addressable lights fit snugly under the buttons, necessitating some careful soldering of a dozen connections starting at 5 volts and ground, and the clear shell elevates the lights from a hidden addition to a fundamental component of the design.

The practical side of things finishes with an EZ Flash Jr sitting beautifully in a clear plastic casing. First, convert a microSD card to FAT32, then load the firmware, and the cartridge is ready to go, as it can hold Game Boy and Game Boy Color ROMs, as well as all those great hacks and homebrews, allowing the library to be stored in one location rather than spread out across a shoebox full of carts. Zac has also attempted to install a clock hack on his flash cart, which entails lifting the crystal oscillator and connecting a flexible board to the button lines to make it run roughly 50% quicker. The good news is that it all works; the bad news is that it throws the OLED out of sync, so he chose to leave it at the original clock speed; after all, the panel, audio, and battery all need to operate together. All of the soldering is done in the amplifier, regulator, lights, and optional clock mod board, so anyone with a good motherboard and a steady hand may follow in Zac’s footsteps without having to start from scratch and machine a casing.

<div style="display: grid;
