Yet operators must reconcile new network equipment with existing optical interfaces, fibre layouts and service hand-offs, making migration an architectural challenge rather than a straightforward hardware replacement.

Artificial intelligence is changing the demands placed on data-centre networks. AI training clusters can connect large numbers of accelerators, while inference systems must move data rapidly between compute, storage and users. The resulting need for capacity is helping to push 400 gigabit and 800 gigabit Ethernet further into network planning. The standards are now in place for much of this transition. The IEEE 802.3cu standard covering 100G and 400G transmission over single-mode fibre was approved in February 2021. The later IEEE 802.3df standard, which addresses 400G and 800G Ethernet, was approved in February 2024. Standards approval, however, does not make a migration automatic. Ethernet speed is only one part of an optical connection. Reach, wavelength plan, fibre count, connector type, error correction, port form factor and the interface used at the opposite end must also align.

LR4 is not one universal interface

A central source of confusion is the use of the term “LR4”. In networking discussions, it is sometimes treated as though it describes one interchangeable optical hand-off. It does not. The letters generally indicate a long-reach interface using four optical wavelengths, but the complete name matters. A 100GBASE-LR4 interface is not the same thing as a 400G interface simply carrying an LR4 label. They have different signalling rates, optical specifications and host requirements.This distinction is particularly important in carrier hotels, colocation facilities and enterprise interconnection environments, where 100GBASE-LR4 hand-offs may already form part of an operational service. Installing a 400G or 800G switch does not make that existing connection compatible with the new port.

For 400G, IEEE 802.3 developed a four-wavelength single-mode-fibre objective using 100 gigabits per second per wavelength. The project included reaches of at least two kilometres and six kilometres. This work resulted in interfaces including 400GBASE-LR4-6, whose full designation is important because the “-6” identifies its six-kilometre reach class. Operators therefore need to identify the exact Ethernet physical-medium specification at every hand-off. Relying on “LR4” as shorthand can conceal material incompatibilities.

An organisation may want an 800G fabric inside a data centre while still receiving external connectivity through 100G or 400G services. These requirements concern different parts of the network. The internal fabric may connect switches, accelerators and storage over short-reach multimode or single-mode links. A carrier-facing connection may use a longer-reach optical interface and terminate on equipment owned by another organisation. Increasing the capacity of the internal fabric does not automatically change that external service boundary.

The objectives adopted for IEEE 802.3df illustrate this diversity. They cover 800G transmission over copper, electrical backplanes, multimode fibre and single-mode fibre. The single-mode objectives include reaches of at least 500 metres and two kilometres, while the multimode objectives include 50-metre and 100-metre applications. This means “800G Ethernet” describes a data rate, not a single optical product capable of addressing every connection. Selecting the appropriate physical interface still depends on distance, fibre availability and the equipment at each end.

Migration requires deliberate adaptation

Where a legacy hand-off cannot be replaced immediately, operators may need an adaptation layer. Depending on the architecture, this can involve a platform that terminates several lower-speed client connections and maps their traffic into a higher-capacity line-side connection. Breakout configurations can also divide a high-capacity port into several lower-rate connections, but they are not a universal remedy. The switch, module, cabling and software must support the required breakout mode, and the resulting lanes must correspond with the receiving interfaces.

Protocol compatibility must not be confused with optical compatibility. Two devices can both support Ethernet and still fail to establish a link because their wavelengths, modulation, reach or fibre arrangements differ. This is one reason a staged migration is often more realistic than wholesale replacement. Operators can introduce a higher-speed switching layer while retaining established service interfaces at the edge, then move individual hand-offs as carriers and customers become ready.

Coherent optics are also becoming relevant to higher-capacity data-centre interconnection, but they should not be presented as a direct substitute for every LR4 connection. Direct-detection interfaces such as LR4 and coherent dense wavelength-division multiplexing interfaces use different optical approaches and address different network applications. Coherent technology provides a way to transmit high-capacity signals across amplified optical systems, particularly where data centres must be connected over metropolitan or longer distances.

In October 2024, the Optical Internetworking Forum published its 800ZR Coherent Implementation Agreement. The agreement specifies 800ZR coherent interfaces for single-span, amplified DWDM links used in data-centre interconnection. It defines client mapping, framing, forward-error correction and optical requirements intended to support interoperable implementations. The specified use case is significant. An 800ZR interface for an amplified DWDM link and a conventional LR4 Ethernet hand-off are not interchangeable merely because both can appear in a data-centre network. A suitable design may use direct-detection optics locally and coherent technology between facilities.

Physical constraints remain

Higher-speed optical deployment also exposes practical constraints beyond nominal bandwidth. The existing fibre plant must be assessed for reach, loss, connector condition and the number of available fibre pairs. Some 800G physical-layer variants use parallel fibres, meaning they require several transmit and receive paths rather than one fibre pair. The IEEE 802.3df objectives, for example, include 800G operation over eight pairs of multimode or single-mode fibre for specified reaches.

Power consumption and heat dissipation also require attention at the equipment-design stage. A network plan must consider not only whether a transceiver fits into a port, but whether the platform supports its electrical interface, software controls and thermal requirements. Procurement presents a further planning issue, although claims of an industry-wide shortage should be treated cautiously unless supported by current supplier or market data. Operators nevertheless face a changing choice of form factors, interface standards and vendor roadmaps. Qualification should therefore consider interoperability, second-source availability and the expected operating life of each component rather than focusing on headline capacity alone.

The move to 400G and 800G is not simply a matter of replacing one generation of transceivers with another. It requires organisations to map their existing hand-offs, fibre infrastructure and reach requirements against the precise interfaces supported by new equipment. AI has increased the urgency of that work, but it has not removed the underlying engineering constraints. Higher-capacity switches can improve a network fabric only when the optical links, fibre routes and external services around them are designed to work together.

For carriers, colocation providers and enterprises, the practical objective is therefore not to eliminate every existing LR4 connection immediately. It is to build a migration path that preserves necessary hand-offs while introducing higher-speed capacity where it delivers a demonstrable benefit. The most resilient strategies will treat 400G and 800G as parts of a wider optical architecture. That means using complete interface designations, validating interoperability and separating local Ethernet requirements from coherent data-centre interconnection. In a rapidly developing AI market, precision at those boundaries is likely to matter as much as the speed printed on the front of the equipment.

<div style="display: grid;
