Not the same hour adjusted for local time, which is how New Year’s Eve works, but the same absolute instant, so that a group in Buenos Aires and a group in Tokyo hear identical audio while their clocks read fourteen hours apart.

ORIGIN is built entirely around that single shared moment. Organizers call it the Moment of Global Unity, and the premise underneath it is that every person alive descends from a common origin, which makes it worth marking the way nations mark a founding.

What happens on the day

The sequence runs a few minutes and unfolds in three parts.

It opens with a multilingual recording made with Indigenous Elders representing 15 nations, each contributing in their own language alongside an English translation, beginning in Aotearoa New Zealand and moving west with the sun. Among the contributors is Ouma Katrina Esau of South Africa’s Northern Cape, who holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Cape Town and South Africa’s Order of the Baobab for her work documenting the N|uu language.

Participants are then asked to touch the ground, a stone or a plant and say aloud the kind of world they want. Then an anthem plays, produced by Michael Gazzo with contributors from more than 15 countries, among them four-time Grammy-nominated Ghanaian musician and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador Rocky Dawuni.

Alongside all of it runs Seed the Dream, a request to plant something where you live and register the location on a map that fills in as commitments accumulate. The event is sponsored by the non-profit Project Biome, which is raising ten million dollars toward soil restoration, food systems, ecological restoration and Indigenous leadership.

Why participation is deliberately cheap

There is no ticket, no venue requirement and no travel involved unless someone chooses it. The flagship weekend, Origin South Africa, runs Oct. 16 to 18 at the Kromdraai Impact Hub inside the Cradle of Humankind outside Johannesburg, but that is an option rather than the product.

The design assumption is that most participants will take part from a backyard, a park or a living room with whoever is already there. Confirmed public events span Australia, New Zealand, Italy, France, Argentina, Zimbabwe, South Africa, the United States and Canada, with a longer tail of private gatherings.

In Toronto, the three-day We Create Our Futures festival, taking place Oct. 16 to 18 at the Centre for Social Innovation, will host an ORIGIN room where attendees can access the global broadcast. The festival will also hold its main ORIGIN Moment of Global Unity at 3 p.m. Toronto time, dedicating approximately half an hour to the synchronized experience.

How you actually synchronize 2,200 locations

The technical question underneath this is more interesting than it first appears, and the person handling it has solved a version of it before.

Chris Deckker, ORIGIN’s Australia-based managing director, launched Earthdance in 1997, a synchronized global event that opened across 22 locations in 18 countries and grew to more than 700 events in 75 countries. In 1997 there was no reliable way to push an audio file to hundreds of venues on cue. Coordination happened by fax, post and physical media mailed weeks ahead, with local organizers trusted to play a track at an agreed UTC moment. The synchronization was social rather than technical, and it worked because everyone had agreed in advance on a number.

That constraint produced a system with no single point of failure. If one venue lost power, the rest continued.

The same logic applies now. ORIGIN is running a live broadcast that moves between continents for several hours, with Canadian company HubCast International serving as its global broadcasting partner.

But a stream is the least robust part of any architecture reaching this footprint. Registered gatherings include events in rural Zimbabwe and Argentina where assuming stable bandwidth would be a design error, so the critical audio reaches participants ahead of the date and the broadcast functions as an enhancement rather than a dependency. Anyone who has built for intermittent connectivity will recognize the pattern.

Coordinating more than 2,000 gatherings also means making the experience accessible to participants with very different levels of technical experience. Many registrations come from households and small community groups rather than traditional event venues, so clear timing and instructions are as important as the broadcast infrastructure itself. The goal is to make it possible for participants anywhere in the world to join the synchronized moment without requiring specialized equipment or production experience.

What the day leaves behind

Two things outlast Oct. 17.

The first is the recording. The Elders were filmed on their own lands by Deborah Anderson, the filmmaker and Leica ambassador who directed Women of the White Buffalo, a documentary about Oglala Lakota women at Pine Ridge that won seven festival awards. Esau, at 92, is the last living first-language speaker of N|uu. The recording will exist long after the day it was made for.

The second is what gets planted. A distributed planting campaign generates location data rather than soil data, and soil organic carbon remains expensive to verify at scale, which is a real limitation. But the plants themselves stay in the ground, and the map showing where they went is a record of how far a single invitation travelled.

Deckker built this structure once before using fax machines and reached 75 countries. The second version has more than 2,000 gatherings committed before the date has even arrived.

<div style="display: grid;
