He pulled the neck off, then placed the remains on tensioned aviation cable and attempted to play the creation. The experiment began as a side question when he was working on another project in his newly constructed garage. The telecaster bridge was redesigned to fit between the two beams. Holsters manufactured using 3D printing were joined to the cables to hold a nut and frets, but when he tested it, the sound was gone. Slot filing on the printed nut made no change. Adding a wooden block under the bridge helped with the string angle, but we still had silence. It wasn\u2019t until we inserted a screwdriver shaft across the cables that we could get a string to ring. However, the hollow aluminum failed badly. A large steel block was required to retain a note for any period of time. This permitted him to refer to the frets as \u201cstainless.\u201d However, the string tension posed a significant challenge. The two primary wires would be pushed out of line, twisting the entire system. He placed the tuners closer to the cables, but even then, tightening one string caused the others to shift. Brackets were designed to support the cables and tuners on the upright rails. He also created a jig to fix the positions for the holster slots, and hot glue was used to secure the dowels. The printed parts were black PETG, so they blended in well with the frame. Fifteen frets was about the limit; he would have preferred a complete twenty-one fret configuration, but bigger bars require a wrench to access the gap between the holsters. The scale length remained the same at 25.5 inches. It\u2019s only that tuning is a process of negotiation; adjust one string, and another drifts. You move back and forth on it till the whole set settles down, and the playing feel is all incorrect in the hands , since there is no neck to rest a palm against, only the backs of those printed holsters. Just like the wood, comfort came with it. For a direct comparison, a Mexican Fender Telecaster with the identical bridge, bridge pickup, and electronics was placed next to it. The contrast was immediate, since the wire guitar produced a hollow tone and allowed the notes to fade away.
