In August 2026, attackers reportedly used AI-generated voice clones to impersonate executives and trusted colleagues in an attempt to gain access to systems at major investment firms including Point72, Citadel, Two Sigma, and Millennium Management. Rather than exploiting software vulnerabilities, the attackers targeted people, using synthetic voices to persuade employees and helpdesk staff to grant access or reset credentials.

The attacks were apparently detected before significant damage occurred. Two Sigma reported that its security team blocked the attempt and identified no impact on data or systems, while Point72 informed investors that its preliminary review found no evidence of client data theft.

However, the incident demonstrates a larger challenge facing businesses worldwide, including organizations across Canada: artificial intelligence is dramatically reducing the effort required to impersonate trusted individuals.

The rise of AI-powered vishing

The attack method is known as “vishing” or voice phishing. Unlike conventional phishing attacks, which typically rely on emails or fraudulent websites, vishing exploits trust through voice communications. What makes modern vishing particularly dangerous is the availability of increasingly sophisticated AI voice-cloning systems. According to reports surrounding the Wall Street campaign, attackers used synthetic voices capable of mimicking executives or colleagues with remarkable accuracy. Publicly available audio from interviews, earnings calls, conference presentations, podcasts and webinars may provide enough material to generate convincing voice replicas.

The implications extend far beyond financial institutions. Any executive with a public profile may inadvertently provide the raw materials required for voice cloning.

For decades, organizations have relied on a combination of procedures, employee training and personal recognition to verify identity. That model increasingly appears inadequate. Bojan Simic, CEO and co-founder of identity security company HYPR and a board member of the FIDO Alliance, argues that the fundamental problem is not employee awareness but architectural design.

Simic states that the reported AI voice attacks targeting major Wall Street firms expose a fundamental flaw in enterprise security: organizations still rely on humans to verify digital identities using their ears and intuition. Simic contends that security strategies based on employees determining whether a voice sounds authentic place staff in an impossible position.

Simif further contends that if your security policy depends on a human deciding whether a voice on the phone is authentic, you’re setting them and your organization’s security posture up for failure. This observation reflects a broader trend in cybersecurity. Increasingly, attackers are bypassing technical defences by exploiting human decision-making processes instead.

Deepfakes become an identity problem

Perhaps the most important lesson from the incident is that deepfakes should no longer be regarded simply as a misinformation issue. They are increasingly becoming an identity-management challenge. Historically, hearing a familiar voice provided a degree of assurance. In many business environments, employees naturally trust requests from recognized executives, senior managers or technical support personnel.

Artificial intelligence has fundamentally weakened that trust mechanism. As Simic notes: Sound and video are no longer trustworthy, and asking employees to distinguish real from fake is a losing battle. This has profound implications for organizations that still use telephone-based verification.

Canadian organisations face similar risks

Although the latest attacks occurred in the U.S., the threat is equally relevant to Canada. Canadian businesses are undergoing rapid digital transformation while simultaneously increasing adoption of artificial intelligence technologies. Statistics Canada recently reported that AI use among Canadian businesses doubled between 2024 and 2025. Businesses in financial services, professional services and technology sectors were among the strongest adopters.

Canada’s financial sector is particularly attractive to cybercriminals because of its concentration of high-value assets and highly connected digital infrastructure. Major Canadian banks and investment firms routinely publish earnings calls, executive interviews and investor presentations online. While these communications support transparency and investor relations, they may also provide the audio content required for sophisticated voice-cloning operations.

The threat extends beyond financial institutions. Healthcare organizations, government agencies, educational institutions and critical infrastructure operators could all become targets if attackers believe they can manipulate personnel through synthetic voice technologies.

A particularly concerning aspect of AI-powered attacks is scale. Traditional social engineering operations required substantial effort. Criminals often needed to research targets individually and conduct convincing impersonations themselves.

Reports on the Wall Street attacks suggest that AI has dramatically lowered barriers to launching large-scale campaigns. What might previously have required a highly skilled team can increasingly be automated and deployed rapidly across many organizations simultaneously. This shift transforms cybercrime from a manual exercise into an industrial operation. Instead of attacking a handful of organizations, threat actors can potentially target hundreds or thousands.

So, what should organizations do? According to Simic, the answer is to eliminate human guesswork from high-risk workflows and replace subjective trust with continuous, deterministic cryptographic proof of identity. This means shifting away from identity verification methods that depend on recognition or intuition. Instead, organizations should implement technologies that provide stronger and more objective confirmation of identity. Under this model, a password reset would not proceed simply because a caller sounds like a senior executive. Instead, verification would depend upon cryptographic proof rather than human judgment.

<div style="display: grid;
