I can understand why the government wants to ensure safety and manage the airspace,\u201d a 48-year-old drone owner surnamed Wu told AFP as he sat in a queue in a DJI store waiting to sell his device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter all, Beijing is the capital,\u201d said Wu, who bought his drone six years ago for around 6,000 yuan.<\/p>\n<p>He was hoping to get at least 1,000 yuan for the sale, which was what he had been given as a preliminary estimate on the official re-selling app.<\/p>\n<p>Some were not satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>Zhu, 60, who called himself a drone hobbyist, said the buy-back scheme was \u201crobbery\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s made me lose a lot of money. This is my private property,\u201d he said, adding that he had sold five drones back, losing thousands on the original prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course I\u2019m not happy\u2026 I\u2019m helpless and furious\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Zhu added that the large number of drones being bought back had sent prices plummeting as much as 40 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Security fears \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Airspace safety fears were raised in June when a light aircraft smashed into Beijing\u2019s tallest building, killing the pilot and injuring 13 others \u2014 as well as briefly disrupting the flight path into one of the capital\u2019s international airports.<\/p>\n<p>The incident, which was heavily censored, seems to have unsettled Beijing authorities, happening just a few kilometres (miles) from the seat of the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing cited a need to \u201csafeguard the security of the capital\u201d when it announced the complete ban on drone possession inside the city.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a \u201clow-altitude\u201d expo scheduled to open Thursday in Beijing was abruptly cancelled, with organisers citing control measures from the city government.<\/p>\n<p>Drone owner Wu said he was pleased that the buy-back plan meant he could easily sell his drone \u2014 which he said he no longer used much anyway \u2014 for a reasonable amount.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI checked some online selling platforms and found that without the subsidy it would sell for maybe half the price\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>It is difficult to know how many drones will be affected by the move.<\/p>\n<p>There were 3.285 million drones registered nationwide at the end of 2025, according to the Civil Aviation Administration, but it is not necessary to register drone ownership in most of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Online, many Beijingers posted farewells to their drone collections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing I can do, thanks for your company,\u201d wrote one user on social media platform Xiaohongshu, known as RedNote abroad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope you can keep roaming the skies in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
