Stadium concerts, premium cinemas, theme parks, immersive attractions, and destination experiences are drawing investment as audiences seek environments that surround them with sound, movement, technology, and other people. A Forbes contributor reported that stadium concerts averaged 56,272 tickets per show in 2025, while premium formats such as ScreenX and 4DX generated $70 million domestically during the first half of 2026. The trend may connect with a longstanding human impulse to cross the boundary between observing a world and entering it.

Technology seems to help expand that possibility. Interactive displays, spatial audio, mixed reality, responsive environments, and increasingly sophisticated venue design can give audiences greater participation in an experience as it unfolds. A Forbes Technology Council contributor points to purpose-built venues, immersive formats, and advances in home technology as examples of entertainment being designed to command deeper attention. Against that backdrop, technologies that encourage physical or sensory involvement may offer another way for audiences to devote their attention to a shared event.

Travel is extending this shift beyond the venue itself. Major sporting events, concerts, and cultural festivals increasingly can become reasons to choose a destination, book accommodations, and build an itinerary around participation. ABC News reported that more than one in three people intended to travel for a cultural event or festival in 2026, while it was said that 81% of travelers surveyed were influenced by major sporting events and 88% by concerts or festivals when deciding where to travel. This suggests an expanding spectrum of engagement, from watching a broadcast, to attending an event, to arranging travel around a distinctive experience, with increasingly personal participation becoming part of the proposition.

Research on consumer behavior offers another perspective on why experiences can command this attention. A study published on ScienceDirect found that experiential purchases were associated with greater moment-to-moment happiness than material purchases in the study samples. Separate research published in the National Library of Medicine found that emotional intensity during shared viewing was associated with social bonding when participants jointly attended to the same content. These findings offer useful context for an economy increasingly interested in experiences people can remember, discuss, and share.

Chris Britt, CEO of HeliBacon, a Texas-based experiential outfitter combining helicopter-based activities with outdoor entertainment, notes that this broader landscape helps explain the appeal of what might be called the “fan voyage,” where the event becomes the reason for the journey, and participation becomes part of the story. “A concertgoer may travel across the country for a particular performance. A sports enthusiast may arrange hospitality, training, or access around a major competition,” he states. “The same principle can extend into more specialized forms of leisure, where the destination provides an opportunity that is difficult to reproduce elsewhere.” For businesses, this can create a potential model in which travel itself becomes part of the experience and personal involvement can add value beyond admission or observation.

Britt sees this dynamic through the customers who travel for the opportunity to participate. He highlights the appeal of combining aviation, firearms, education, and adventure. His observation points toward a useful distinction within experiential entertainment: the activity itself can become a vehicle for personal storytelling. A guest may remember the landscape, the flight, the novelty of the setting, and the fact that they personally took part. The feral hog management component associated with HeliBacon’s activities adds another dimension, connecting a recreational experience with a practical land-management context.

That dynamic can also turn a highly specialized experience into a reason to travel. Britt observes that HeliBacon attracts guests from across the country and from international destinations, with some travelers incorporating the experience into trips that might otherwise have centered on business or tourism. “People really want to fly in a helicopter and shoot a machine gun at a moving target,” he shares. “They want the novelty, personal participation, and the sense of accomplishing something few people have experienced firsthand.” The broader lesson for experiential businesses is that a distinctive activity can become part of a destination’s appeal when it gives customers a story they can personally tell, document, and share.

Greater participation also raises the expectations surrounding the experience itself. When customers move from watching to taking an active role, the business has a greater responsibility to create an environment where that participation can happen responsibly. In an experience built around aviation and firearms, those qualities become part of the guest experience, alongside the excitement and novelty that initially attract customers. More broadly, the lesson applies across experiential entertainment. The more directly people participate, the more carefully the experience has to be designed around their involvement.

The larger opportunity may lie in designing experiences around agency. Travel, technology, live entertainment, and specialized recreation are creating more ways for people to move from audience members into participants, while businesses gain new possibilities for destination-driven demand and premium experiences. The human desire for memorable participation has existed for centuries; modern transportation, technology, and business models may simply be expanding the number of places where that desire can be served.

Ultimately, as digital entertainment continues to offer greater convenience and abundance, physical experiences may acquire additional value through their specificity, social dimension, and limited availability. The emerging question for entertainment and travel businesses may be how much of an experience customers can personally enter, influence, and remember. That shift could continue to expand the experience economy from something people watch into something in which they directly participate.

<div style="display: grid;
