Manufacturers have invested heavily in robotics, machine vision systems, automated filling equipment and sophisticated production technologies designed to improve efficiency and reduce costs. The result has been a change of manufacturing operations. Packaging plants that once relied heavily on manual labour now operate highly automated production lines capable of producing thousands of units per hour with remarkable consistency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet one area has remained comparatively resistant to automation: <strong>logistics<\/strong>. Despite advances in warehouse management systems and transport management software, much of the day-to-day work involved in moving goods through supply chains still depends on people. Logistics teams routinely spend hours tracking shipments, contacting carriers, managing delays, resolving exceptions and providing customers with delivery updates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may now be changing. A growing number of technology providers are developing what are often termed \u201cagentic AI\u201d systems, software capable not merely of assisting employees but of carrying out operational tasks autonomously. Among the latest examples is WILSON, an autonomous logistics employee developed by freight technology company https:\/\/www.go-cartage.com\/.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Cartage, WILSON is already managing more than US$1 billion worth of freight across more than 75 organisations, handling activities that would traditionally have required teams of logistics coordinators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of the public discussion surrounding artificial intelligence has focused on large language models and AI assistants. Tools such as Microsoft Copilot have demonstrated how AI can help employees draft documents, answer questions and improve productivity. WILSON represents a different category altogether.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than responding to prompts, the system is designed to operate within a company\u2019s existing software infrastructure. Cartage says the platform can communicate with carriers through email, telephone and SMS, book freight, monitor shipments, identify disruptions and keep customers informed about delivery status. The concept reflects a broader shift occurring across enterprise AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research firm Gartner has identified agentic AI as one of the most significant emerging trends in business technology, describing systems capable of autonomously planning and taking actions aimed at achieving defined objectives. Unlike earlier generations of business software that required direct human input at every stage, agentic systems are increasingly able to make routine operational decisions independently while remaining under organisational oversight. For industries characterised by highly structured workflows, logistics may be one of the most obvious early applications.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-why-packaging-stands-to-benefit\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why packaging stands to benefit<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Packaging companies frequently operate within complex supply chains involving raw material suppliers, manufacturers, co-packers, distributors, warehouses and transport providers. The sector has also faced considerable disruption in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to CIPS, supply chains continue to experience challenges linked to geopolitical uncertainty, transportation disruptions, inflationary pressures and changing customer expectations regarding delivery performance and transparency. Against this backdrop, logistics teams often find themselves overwhelmed by routine administrative tasks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shipment delays, carrier communications, delivery scheduling, documentation issues and customer enquiries can generate hundreds of interactions each day. While individually straightforward, these activities consume significant operational resources. That creates a potentially attractive opportunity for autonomous AI systems. Unlike traditional automation technologies that replace repetitive physical activities, logistics-focused AI targets repetitive decision-making and communications processes. The technology essentially applies automation principles to information workflows rather than manufacturing operations.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-measuring-the-business-case\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Measuring the business case<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The long-term success of autonomous AI systems will ultimately depend on whether they can demonstrate measurable business value. This is where Cartage believes WILSON is delivering results. According to the company, organisations using the platform have reduced manual logistics workloads by as much as 97 per cent while achieving average freight cost reductions of approximately 8 per cent. While such claims naturally require validation within individual deployment environments, they align with a wider trend emerging across enterprise technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Businesses are increasingly moving away from AI experimentation towards practical implementation. Recent research from McKinsey &amp; Company indicates that organisations are placing growing emphasis on achieving measurable returns from AI investments rather than simply adopting the technology for its novelty value. Companies are increasingly seeking applications capable of delivering operational improvements, productivity gains and cost reductions. For logistics-intensive industries such as packaging, transportation management provides a clear environment in which return on investment can potentially be quantified through labour savings, service improvements and freight optimisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The emergence of systems such as WILSON is also contributing to a larger debate regarding the future of work. Predictions that AI will replace large numbers of employees have dominated headlines since the arrival of generative AI. However, many analysts believe a more nuanced process is likely to occur. This includes some new roles which are also expected to emerge as organisations adapt to technological change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within logistics functions, autonomous systems may reduce the amount of time employees spend monitoring deliveries or responding to routine enquiries. Human workers would then be able to focus on relationship management, strategic planning, procurement, supplier performance and exception handling. In practice, this could shift logistics professionals away from transactional activities and towards higher-value decision-making.
