The union is also pressing for exemptions and a payment to offset increased travel and childcare costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Barclays said many employees already work in the office for three or more days and that being on-site fostered collaboration and helped people learn from eachother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It added that it recognised &#8220;the benefits of balancing flexibility for colleagues with the importance of working together in our physical locations&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The bank sent a memo to staff in July outlining its expectations, which include that senior leaders work at least four days per week in the office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But the bank is facing a growing backlash against the proposed rules change, first reported in the Financial Times<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-i2z2ig-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Unite national officer Rick Coyle said thousands of employees have signed an open letter calling for Barclays to reverse the decision, and the number of signatories &#8220;continues to rise&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He added that Barclays is &#8220;trying to fix a problem that doesn&#8217;t exist&#8221; in making its working-from-home rules less flexible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The open letter<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-i2z2ig-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span> says workers are delivering &#8220;strong financial results and improved customer services&#8221; with its current working from home policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It adds that thousands of workers have made suggestions, which the union has condensed into a series of demands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">These include:<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-2st5ed-ListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">an exemption for people whose commutes are longer than 40 minutes or 35 miles <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">exemptions during Christmas, summer, and school holidays<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">a maximum one day in the office for carers<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">flexibility for wrap-around childcare, and childcare vouchers and onsite creches to be explored<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">a one-off payment to offset costs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Our minimum time in office requirements vary by business area, reflecting the nature of the work and the needs of the business,&#8221; a spokesperson for the bank said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Barclays declined to say how many staff would be affected by the rule change. However, the BBC understands that there are different requirements depending on teams, with, for example, investment bankers in the office for five days per week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The coronavirus pandemic forced many businesses to allow working from home, depending on the nature of the business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Since then, many organisations have been increasingly recalling workers to the office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There is evidence that hybrid working may be the best fit for many workers and businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But a lot of large organisations including Amazon, Boots and JP Morgan took the decision to bring in policies requiring head office staff to be in every day after the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">This week, Ewan Venters, the executive chair of fashion brand Paul Smith, told the BBC&#8217;s Big Boss Interview podcast that working from home &#8220;just doesn&#8217;t work&#8221; for young people and urged the government to stay out of decisions over where employees work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In June, digital bank Revolut said it was shifting away from its &#8220;remote-first&#8221;
