He recently went viral on social media, writing on X that \u201cthe people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gomez takes issue with turning that fear into a number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat concerns me about these doomsday narratives is that people like to assign specific probabilities,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s not a mathematical result, and it\u2019s extremely misleading to the public to throw out these numbers that are just like, your gut vibe check on what might be coming, as though it\u2019s a concrete quantitative measurement.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said he\u2019s more focused on risks that companies and governments can already observe and measure, including cyberattacks and the potential use of AI systems to help develop biological weapons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gomez also criticized part of a proposal from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, published last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In calling for AI labs to work together on slowing \u201cthe pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amodei said that U.S. antitrust laws could prohibit such collaboration. He said the government would need to issue a \u201cnarrow waiver\u201d or exemption for these companies to work together on safety conversations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that is a huge red flag,\u201d Gomez said, arguing for a government-led process that brings stakeholders together, keeping the \u201creality\u201d of the tech in front of them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt shouldn\u2019t be a few companies in Silicon Valley setting the bar and trying to pull up the ladder behind them and implement regulatory capture,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-who-was-there\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who was there<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joining Cullen and Gomez, Canada\u2019s Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Evan Solomon said they\u2019re taking these risks seriously, and that we need to be \u201cpragmatic about building reliable AI,\u201d capturing benefits while maintaining safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also on stage was German Federal Minister for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation Karsten Wildberger, who said that we need to use the moment to \u201cwork on safety by design.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ALLIN_16-09-AM_melanieolmsteadphotographe-213-1200x800.jpg\" alt=\"German Federal Minister for Digital Affairs Karsten Wildberger. \" class=\"wp-image-3864035\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ALLIN_16-09-AM_melanieolmsteadphotographe-213-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ALLIN_16-09-AM_melanieolmsteadphotographe-213-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ALLIN_16-09-AM_melanieolmsteadphotographe-213-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ALLIN_16-09-AM_melanieolmsteadphotographe-213-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ALLIN_16-09-AM_melanieolmsteadphotographe-213-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">German Federal Minister for Digital Affairs Karsten Wildberger. \u2013 Photo courtesy of ALL IN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aleph Alpha co-founder and co-chief research officer Samuel Weinbach rounded out the panel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cohere and Aleph Alpha just signed a definitive agreement to merge the two companies, five months after the two companies first announced the deal in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weinback came out against letting fear set the terms of the conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we need is transparency,\u201d he said, calling for researchers and policymakers to define risks, measure them, and decide what action should follow.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-the-takeaways\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The takeaways<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Cullen asked Gomez where the focus of AI safety should be, he had a list of three tasks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, define the risks. Governments and companies need to decide which threats they are trying to mitigate and establish ways to measure them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, test the models. Every organization developing advanced AI should carry \u201ca burden of proof\u201d that its models are sufficiently safe across the risks governments decide to track.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Third, require transparency when something goes wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMake it public,\u201d Gomez said. \u201cShow how it failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He pointed to OpenAI\u2019s disclosure of an incident involving Hugging Face as an example of why failures should be visible. Gomez said the incident exposed weaknesses in the sandbox where the model had been placed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you do those three things, we\u2019re in an infinitely better position than we are today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-what-to-think-about-if-you-re-a-tech-leader\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What to think about if you\u2019re a tech leader<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forget the straight-outta-sci-fi doomsday risk-of-human-extinction point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(It\u2019s hard, I know, but stick with me.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gomez shared the stage with two government ministers, but his three points can be turned into a set of questions for vendors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting with the risks, ask what kinds of failures the vendor tests for, how those tests work, and what evidence they can provide so the model meets its own safety thresholds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, ask what happens when something goes wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does the provider disclose incidents? What information will customers receive? How quickly? It\u2019s hard to ignore the screaming headlines dominating the news right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stepping down a little closer to the day-to-day, the fight is over who gets to write the rules. As Gomez said, a handful of major U.S. labs shouldn\u2019t get to decide that on their own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technology carries risk.
