A similar study by AARP found that an estimated 59 million family caregivers supported an adult family member, a neighbor, or a friend with their daily activities in 2025, and about 63% provided care every month. The numbers appear to demonstrate the growing need to support caregivers, especially as they navigate financial, mental, logistical, and physical challenges, often with limited support. While the health system seems to increasingly focus on patient care through telehealth and options such as hospital-at-home, the needs of family caregivers often remain unaddressed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The need for adaptive changes is further highlighted by the fact that 1 in 10 caregivers are self-employed to balance work and elder-care responsibilities, according to a study by A Place For Mom. Thirty-five percent of respondents also said caregiving has left them with less time to focus on paid work. Meanwhile, a Washington University report highlights that enrollment in private long-term care insurance remains low, while Medicaid, the primary public payer for long-term care, faces ongoing fiscal and policy pressures. These conditions can create lasting financial constraints for caregivers and their families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The responsibilities of family caregivers can extend well beyond financial support. They may need to keep track of medications, symptoms, appointments, medical questions, daily routines, and new concerns that emerge throughout the day. Caregivers can experience complex emotions, including anxiety, guilt, anger, and disappointment. Caregiving can also take time away from work, personal activities, and self-care, contributing to burnout, as a U.S. News survey found. While professional psychological support can play an important role, caregivers may also need practical tools that help them manage the ordinary, repeated demands of care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research published in Sage Journals highlights how AI tools can assist with difficult conversations and interpersonal relationships. In caregiving, similar technology could potentially help with some of the information-management tasks that consume caregivers\u2019 attention. Remembering instructions, organizing information, tracking routines, and surfacing reminders are relatively narrow functions, but they can matter when responsibilities accumulate across weeks and months. The value of such tools, however, often depends on how well they complement rather than attempt to replace human care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the space that Reli aims to address. Founded by Julie Peck, along with her son Jakob, following her experience as a full-time caregiver for her mother, the platform is built around the idea that caregiving involves two connected needs: helping older adults manage aspects of everyday life independently and giving caregivers better visibility into what is happening between visits or conversations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than functioning solely as a task-management tool for caregivers, Reli operates on both sides of the relationship. For seniors, its features include medication and appointment reminders, daily orientation information such as the date and schedule, voice-based interaction, and conversational activities such as trivia, stories, and music. For caregivers, the platform can provide activity updates and well-being alerts while allowing them to send messages and scheduled reminders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction, Peck notes, is relevant because caregiver strain is not limited to the number of tasks that need to be completed. She states, \u201cPart of the burden comes from uncertainty: Did a parent remember an appointment? Did they take medication? How was their day? Does something require attention? A system that helps communicate routine information may reduce some of the need for caregivers to repeatedly check in or reconstruct what happened during the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Peck, Reli\u2019s approach also places the older adult, rather than only the caregiver, within the technology loop. Through the platform, connected caregivers can view activity reports, send reminders, and communicate with the senior, regardless of caregiver location. This creates a shared layer of information between the two while leaving the caregiver responsible for interpreting that information and deciding when human intervention is necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another feature, Life Story, aims to address a different aspect of caregiving. Daily prompts intend to encourage seniors to record memories and experiences, which can then be viewed by connected caregivers. Peck notes that while this does not directly solve a logistical problem, it recognizes that elder care also involves maintaining relationships and preserving personal history. \u201cFor families who have limited time together, those records can provide conversation starters and another way to remain connected,\u201d she remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peck\u2019s motivation for developing Reli comes from the same gap the broader caregiving landscape exposes. After six years as a full-time caregiver for her late mother, she describes learning lessons about caregiving only after she needed them herself. That experience led her to focus on adding a technology layer to the day-to-day responsibilities of care, particularly the mental load created by having to remember and coordinate numerous small tasks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her work has also extended beyond the platform itself. Through the Coming Clean About Caregiving podcast, Peck brings together family caregivers, clinicians, and elder-care experts to discuss the practical and emotional realities of caregiving. In that context, Reli is one part of a broader effort to make caregiving information and support more accessible, rather than a substitute for professional care or family involvement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, Peck stresses that there are clear boundaries to what technology can address. An AI companion can remind someone about a medication, but it may not determine whether a new symptom requires medical attention. Activity data can give a caregiver additional context, but it may not replace a conversation or an in-person assessment. Moreover, companionship features may help with moments of isolation without resolving the underlying demands placed on families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReli\u2019s overall aim is to reduce the mental and emotional load on caregivers,\u201d she notes. \u201cWe want to play a role in relieving caregiver burnout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more consequential role for platforms may be narrower: reducing friction around the repetitive information and coordination work that surrounds caregiving. If those tools can make everyday responsibilities easier to organize while keeping caregivers connected to older family members, they could become one layer of a larger support system.
