The device, unveiled through Apple Newsroom and showcased on the Apple iPhone platform, signals the company\u2019s entry into a market that has long promised the convenience of a larger screen without sacrificing portability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet foldable smartphones present one of the most demanding engineering challenges in modern electronics. Creating a handset capable of surviving hundreds of thousands of folds requires extraordinary precision, not only in the display but throughout the device\u2019s structure. As foldable devices move into the mainstream, attention is increasingly turning to the manufacturing technologies that make them possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One technology receiving renewed attention is the femtosecond laser, an advanced industrial tool capable of processing materials at microscopic scales with exceptional precision. According to LITILIT, a Lithuanian manufacturer of femtosecond laser systems, rising demand for foldable smartphones, wearables and compact electronics is placing new importance on precision manufacturing technologies.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-challenge-of-building-a-foldable-phone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The challenge of building a foldable phone<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foldable smartphones are significantly more complicated to manufacture than conventional handsets. The display itself is only one component in a carefully engineered system. Flexible OLED panels, ultra-thin glass layers, microelectronics, antenna assemblies, ceramics and miniature hinges must all work together while repeatedly bending under mechanical stress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apple has disclosed that the hinge assembly of the iPhone Duo incorporates more than 100 components. Such complexity illustrates how foldable devices rely on sophisticated materials engineering to balance strength, flexibility and durability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every component must be manufactured to exacting tolerances. A microscopic flaw that would go unnoticed in a conventional electronic device can become the starting point for a crack after thousands of folding cycles. As Nikolajus Gavrilinas, co-founder and chief executive of LITILIT, explains, electronics manufacturers are increasingly operating close to the limits of current fabrication technologies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven a tiny defect can turn into a crack that makes the whole component unusable,\u201d Gavrilinas notes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key enabler of this precision is the femtosecond laser. Unlike conventional industrial lasers, femtosecond systems generate pulses lasting only a quadrillionth of a second (10\u207b\u00b9\u2075 seconds). Because these pulses are so brief, material can be removed before surrounding areas absorb significant heat. This characteristic offers a major advantage when manufacturing delicate electronic components. Traditional machining methods can introduce thermal stress, micro-cracks and unwanted debris. Femtosecond laser processing greatly reduces these risks by providing highly controlled material removal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The growing importance of ultrafast laser technologies has been widely documented by specialist publications such as Laser Focus World and Photonics Media, both of which track developments in precision laser manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers publishing through Nature Photonics and the Optica Publishing Group have similarly highlighted the importance of ultrashort-pulse lasers for advanced manufacturing applications ranging from micromachining to semiconductor fabrication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the electronics sector, the appeal is straightforward. As devices become smaller and more densely packed, the margin for manufacturing error continues to shrink.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-enabling-next-generation-oled-displays\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Enabling next-generation OLED displays<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most important applications for femtosecond lasers is the production of OLED displays. OLED technology has become the dominant display platform for premium smartphones, smartwatches and foldable devices due to its flexibility, reduced thickness and superior image quality. Industry organisations and specialist resource OLED-Info have highlighted OLED\u2019s growing role in next-generation display technologies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, manufacturing these displays is exceptionally demanding. OLED panels comprise multiple layers of organic light-emitting materials, electrical circuitry and protective films stacked with micron-level precision. Any heat damage can compromise performance, lower yields or shorten operating life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Gavrilinas, femtosecond lasers provide a means of processing these materials while minimising thermal effects that might damage adjacent layers. \u00a0As foldable screens become increasingly sophisticated, manufacturers are expected to rely even more heavily on high-precision processing technologies to achieve acceptable production yields.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically, while advanced lasers help manufacturers scale production of consumer electronics, manufacturing the lasers themselves presents a challenge. Femtosecond laser systems require expertise in photonics, optics, electronics and precision engineering. Unlike conventional industrial equipment, production often depends on highly specialised personnel and carefully controlled manufacturing processes. At the same time, demand is increasing across multiple industries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond smartphones, femtosecond lasers are finding applications in semiconductor manufacturing, medical-device production, photonics, battery technology and data-centre infrastructure. The semiconductor sector alone is driving substantial demand for precision manufacturing technologies. Industry bodies such as SEMI and leading chip-equipment manufacturers including ASML continue to highlight the growing need for highly specialised fabrication tools as semiconductor architectures become more complex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is a familiar pattern seen elsewhere in the technology industry: bottlenecks can emerge not because demand is lacking, but because production capacity struggles to keep pace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address these challenges, LITILIT has focused on simplifying the manufacture of its laser systems. According to the company, reducing component complexity, introducing modular architectures and increasing automation can improve production scalability and simplify factory integration. \u00a0The company\u2019s technology is based on patented developments created by co-founders K\u0119stutis Regelskis, Nerijus Rusteika and Nikolajus Gavrilinas in collaboration with Lithuania\u2019s Centre for Physical Sciences and Technology. According to the company, its architecture achieves approximately 20 per cent electrical-to-optical femtosecond efficiency, a notable result within the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In June, the company began constructing a high-capacity manufacturing facility in Vilnius. The factory is expected to initially produce around 1,000 femtosecond lasers annually before expanding towards a target capacity of 3,000 units per year. The arrival of Apple\u2019s foldable smartphone underlines a broader trend in technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Competitive advantage is increasingly being determined not only by industrial design and software capabilities but also by advances in manufacturing science. Consumers may notice thinner devices, lighter materials and flexible displays, yet these innovations are ultimately made possible by technologies operating at microscopic scales deep within global supply chains. As foldable smartphones, advanced wearables and next-generation consumer electronics continue to evolve, precision manufacturing will become ever more important.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future of foldable devices may therefore depend not only on breakthrough consumer products, but also on the specialised laser systems, advanced materials and manufacturing technologies that quietly enable them.
