It\u2019s nothing like a new idea, but it\u2019s been trundling around in discussions about AI since AI was first perceived as a threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theory of shutting down a dysfunctional system has never been new in human history. Since the invention of machines, a shutdown option has been pretty much a standard design requirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The obvious first likely source of trouble is that with AI being embedded in everything, what else gets shut down by the kill switch? Critical systems? Power grids? The magic word for that situation is \u201cbackup\u201d. It\u2019s not necessarily a fatal issue, and backups are also standard design features of most systems.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-less-obvious-issues-with-a-kill-switch\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The less obvious issues with a kill switch<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if the basic idea is simple, there are many other issues with the mandatory kill switch. There are also some obvious and less obvious problems that don\u2019t seem to be getting much thought, at least, not yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can easily argue that a kill switch as a first line of emergency defence is quite reasonable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI aficionados please excuse some very basic Q&amp;A, but it\u2019s necessary to spell out a few things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the issues start:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The need to use a kill switch is clearly based on discovery, so at what point do you \u201cdiscover\u201d it?<\/strong> You first need to know that you have a problem, and AI can be pretty evasive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When do you really <em>know<\/em> that you have an kill switch scenario?<\/strong> After it\u2019s been running for days, weeks, months?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What gets killed in any given scenario?<\/strong> A single AI operator, an agentic AI network, or a cascade of systems associated with the AI?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Does the kill switch work and really kill the problem?<\/strong> Given that AI can duplicate itself, what if it simply dodges the bullet and vanishes?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can you restore whatever damage has been done?<\/strong> The recovery stage is equally important. What if the kill switch kills AI tracks and clues of essential information?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can AI figure out how to use a kill switch?<\/strong> Probably. Nobody knows for sure, but if it can, what\u2019s stopping it from using it on another Ai?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>At what point is a kill switch <em>able<\/em> to be used by the third party?<\/strong> Automatically, in a discretionary subroutine, or in another discretionary mode at higher levels? \u201cToo late\u201d won\u2019t work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do you coordinate the response to a kill switch scenario?<\/strong> There may be thousands or millions of operations involved. The perfect \u201ckill everything\u201d response may not be possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can you kill a synthetic identity masquerading as a human?<\/strong> That could get ugly if you mistake a person for an AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What happens if the kill switch is compromised, either by AI or human actors?<\/strong> Security is only so secure.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-so-far-unanswerable-issues-with-a-kill-switch\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The (so far) unanswerable issues with a kill switch<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AIs are diverse, and their behaviours in any environment are the major causes of the need for a kill switch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These behaviours aren\u2019t being addressed to anything like the point of certainty of proper behaviour. What we have at the moment are anecdotes, not solutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few more questions:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Can you control AI behaviour with an automated or custom compliance key in prompts?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Can you use AI\u2019s famous survival instincts to ensure it knows not to trigger a kill switch?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Can AI be given a blind spot, so it doesn\u2019t know that the kill switch is in place and inevitably try to evade it?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Do you need peripheral monitoring of an environment to ensure the kill switch works as intended? \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Do you have \u201cwatertight doors\u201d to stop AI behaviour leaking out in an emergency?<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-kill-switch-vs-self-improvement\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kill switch vs self-improvement<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This could be the OK Corral for the kill switch idea. <strong>AI self-improvement<\/strong> is a huge issue with good reason at the moment, and the frame of reference is expanding daily. It\u2019s the main reason people are talking about \u201cuncontrollable\u201d AI, and it\u2019s not all hype.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Autonomy is a major component of self-improvement, and autonomous AI can be very unpredictable. It\u2019s not quite as much of a wild card as it might seem. Inbuilt <strong>validation protocols<\/strong> could be used to manage behaviour, maybe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a big maybe. These protocols already exist, and they haven\u2019t stopped the incessant hail of AI problems. The risks are ready to go if self-improvement decides to fight a kill switch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s not get too cute about this. <strong>The mere fact that slowing development is under discussion<\/strong> should be enough warning for the most na\u00efve that there is a real problem.
