height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:0\">\n<p>A little cheer rose for 79-year-old Hwang Sun-hee after she managed to place an online order at a training session in South Korea,\u00a0which has one of the world\u2019s starkest digital divides for seniors.<\/p>\n<p>Age gaps in digital literacy are a global concern, yet the gulf has widened massively in the hyper-connected and fast-ageing country, prompting national campaigns to bridge it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t do anything without smartphone apps or a kiosk machine\u2026 It\u2019s too much for old folks,\u201d Hwang said at a senior community centre in Suwon, south of Seoul,\u00a0during government-organised digital survival training.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called grey digital divide has provided some striking examples in the nation of about 52 million, home to world-leading smartphone and memory chipmakers.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, several baseball clubs began reserving a small number of tickets for on-site sales after reports that older fans, cash in hand, approached younger people at stadiums and pleaded with them to buy tickets from machines.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 90 percent of taxi drivers use ride-hailing apps, yet more than 80 percent of South Koreans over 60 still hail cabs by hand, a survey showed.<\/p>\n<p>A 71-year-old retired public servant at the same training session as Hwang recalled spending over 30 minutes trying to flag down a taxi on a busy Seoul street.<\/p>\n<p>The cabs kept passing him to pick up younger riders just metres away who were using smartphone apps to hail their rides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt utterly useless,\u201d the man, who gave only his surname, Park, told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 South Korea\u2019s wide divide \u2013<\/p>\n<p>The digital divide can also pose a real threat, leaving older people vulnerable to high-tech crimes such as online scams or limiting their access to medical services, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>A state survey last year found that 60 percent of South Koreans over 60 struggle to use public and commercial services due to lack of digital skills \u2014 compared with just six percent of those under 40.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe intergenerational digital divide (in South Korea) appears\u00a0wider than elsewhere,\u201d said Kim Jeung-kun, professor of senior business at Kangnam University in Seoul.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the nation\u2019s \u201cintensely compressed\u201d industrialisation happened in just a few decades, while it took centuries in many Western countries.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea \u2014 which had a GDP per capita below $100 in the wake of its 1950-1953 war \u2014 is now the world\u2019s 15th largest economy, according to the IMF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of our elderly grew up at a time when many had no electricity, landline phones or proper schooling,\u201d Kim added.<\/p>\n<p>The nation\u2019s older cohort is massive \u2014 South Korea is what the UN calls a \u201csuper-aged society\u201d, where more than 20 percent of the population is over 65.<\/p>\n<p>In response, South Korea\u2019s public tech training for the elderly began in 2020, when businesses and services turned online during the Covid-19 lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 A wish to be \u2018born young\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Hwang, echoing others in the two-hour class, said she\u2019s made it this far by relying on her children for daily tasks she once managed herself \u2014 including enrolling in her favourite dance class at the local community centre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore, I could easily do all of these just by calling or showing up in person,\u201d Hwang said.<\/p>\n<p>Officials now provide nationwide training for the \u201cdigitally vulnerable\u201d for using mobile devices, apps, and AI. Vans packed with tech devices and mock kiosks drive to community centres and regional festivals popular among the elderly.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, over 65,000 sessions were held for some 650,000 people over 60.<\/p>\n<p>Hwang gathered along with 30 neighbours for a session in August,\u00a0practising how to pay hospital bills at mock kiosks, patting a prancing robot dog, or asking their phones: \u201cGemini, tell me about tomorrow\u2019s weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She has undergone similar training several times \u2014 and said the lessons helped her confidence \u2014 but noted she was \u201cso envious of young people who can do all this so easily\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I had been born young in today\u2019s world,\u201d Hwang added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
