Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok are now routinely asked about political parties, candidates, polling trends and likely election outcomes. Some observers see AI as the next evolution of electoral forecasting, capable of processing vast volumes of information far beyond the reach of conventional polling. Others argue that chatbots remain unreliable narrators, vulnerable to bias, misinformation and flawed reasoning. The truth, as is often the case with emerging technologies, lies somewhere in the middle.

Traditional election polling faces well-documented challenges. Response rates have declined sharply, many voters are reluctant to participate in surveys, and political preferences can shift rapidly during campaigns. These limitations have encouraged researchers to explore alternative approaches. AI systems offer an appealing proposition. They can analyse vast quantities of data from news reports, public opinion surveys, social media platforms, economic indicators and historical voting patterns. In theory, an advanced chatbot could integrate multiple streams of information and identify trends more rapidly than conventional polling organisations.

Some researchers have even suggested that LLM-driven analysis of social media sentiment could outperform traditional opinion polls under certain circumstances. A study examining Indian state elections reported that an LLM-based approach analysing political conversations on X (formerly Twitter) showed promising predictive capabilities when compared with conventional polling methods. Such findings have fuelled claims that AI may eventually become a valuable tool for political forecasting.

The Problem: Chatbots Do Not Actually “Know” the Future

Despite growing enthusiasm, there is a fundamental limitation. Chatbots do not possess predictive intelligence in the way many people imagine. Large language models generate responses by identifying patterns in the data on which they were trained and any information they can access through search tools. They do not conduct original polling, observe voter intentions directly or possess any unique insight into future events. Their forecasts are ultimately derived from existing information. This creates a significant vulnerability when election campaigns enter unpredictable territory.

Events such as scandals, economic shocks, major debates, international crises or sudden changes in voter turnout can dramatically alter electoral outcomes in ways that historical patterns fail to capture. Human forecasters struggle with such developments; AI systems struggle even more because they often assume that past relationships will continue into the future. In practice, many chatbot predictions are little more than sophisticated summaries of current polling data combined with historical trends.

Studies examining chatbot performance in election-related contexts paint a mixed picture. Researchers at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue recently evaluated leading AI models on election-related questions and found significant reliability issues. Approximately 29 per cent of responses were classified as incomplete, inaccurate or outdated. Errors included incorrect election dates, obsolete voting requirements and incomplete procedural information. While this research focused primarily on election information rather than outcome prediction, it highlights a broader challenge. If chatbots struggle to consistently answer factual questions about elections, confidence in their ability to forecast results should remain cautious.

Researchers at University College Dublin similarly found that major chatbot platforms generally performed well on basic electoral questions but produced misleading, incomplete or inconsistent responses when dealing with more complex political topics and candidate-related information. In some cases, candidates were omitted entirely or election outcomes were incorrectly reported. These findings suggest that AI systems can provide useful political information but remain vulnerable to factual inaccuracies.

In a related example, a recent study showed that leading AI chatbots gave unclear, outdated or inaccurate answers to questions about mail-in voting, voter registration and where to cast ballots in the upcoming midterms. If you are covering this story, or anything related to AI and elections, Marc Fernandez, Chief Strategy Officer at Neurologyca, sent a message to Digital Journal to explain the research background: “A new study from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue tested 2,400 responses from six leading AI chatbots on election questions across 10 states. One result stood out: when similar questions were asked in Spanish instead of English, performance dropped by an average of 16%. That matters because more people are turning to AI to find information and make decisions. Elections are a tough test for these systems. Rules vary by state, sometimes by county, and they can change from one cycle to the next.”

Fernandez’s analysis runs: “The Spanish-language gap is troubling on its own. People shouldn’t get worse information simply because they ask a question in Spanish. The language gap isn’t the only problem, though. The study looks at whether the answers were accurate, current and well sourced. Those matter. But in a high-stakes situation, a system also needs to understand what the person is trying to do. Take a voter asking, “Can I still register?” They’re probably not asking out of curiosity. They’re trying to vote, and they may be running out of time.”

AI succeeds when it understands context, purpose and human expectations.

Fernandez adds: “A good response should pick up on that urgency. It leads with the deadline and treats location as part of the answer. If the rules changed recently, it says so. If anything is uncertain, it points the voter to their election office to confirm. That context is the difference between an answer that helps and one that just happens to be right. Elections make the problem easy to see because the stakes are clear and timing matters. The same is true in health, benefits, money and personal safety. AI has gotten very good at producing answers that sound convincing. It still has a long way to go in understanding why someone is asking, what they’re trying to accomplish and what could happen if the answer sends them in the wrong direction.”

This returns to an ongoing issue with AI, the need for the human-in-the-loop: “That’s the human-context problem. It means understanding the goal, situation and intent behind a request. It’s also the problem my company works on, but this is much bigger than any one company. As AI takes on more responsibility, people are going to expect more than a correct answer. They’re going to expect the system to understand what they actually need.”

AI May Influence Elections More Than It Predicts Them

An unexpected twist in this discussion is that chatbots may ultimately prove more effective at influencing elections than forecasting them. Researchers from Cornell University reported that brief conversations with AI chatbots could significantly alter voter attitudes. Experiments conducted during elections in the United States, Canada and Poland found measurable shifts in political preferences following chatbot interactions. In some cases, support moved by around ten percentage points among opposition voters. The researchers emphasised that the persuasive power came largely from the volume of supporting arguments generated by the chatbot rather than from sophisticated psychological manipulation. However, they also cautioned that many of these arguments could contain inaccuracies or omit important context.

This creates a paradox. AI may be insufficiently accurate to predict election outcomes reliably, yet powerful enough to influence voter perceptions.

Another issue concerns political bias. Several academic studies have investigated whether large language models exhibit political leanings. Some have found evidence that certain models display systematic preferences when discussing political candidates or policy positions. Researchers have also documented cases where interactions with AI systems altered users’ political attitudes, even when persuasion was not the stated objective. For election prediction, this matters because biased assumptions can affect forecasts. If a model systematically assigns greater credibility to one set of political narratives over another, its predictions may become skewed. The problem is particularly difficult because many AI systems operate as “black boxes”. Users can see the output but not always the reasoning behind it.

The Future of AI Election Forecasting

Rather than replacing pollsters, political scientists or forecasting specialists, AI is more likely to become an additional analytical tool. Future systems may help researchers identify emerging trends, analyse public sentiment across multiple platforms and test alternative electoral scenarios. Combined with polling, demographic modelling and economic indicators, AI could improve forecasting accuracy. Used in isolation, however, it remains risky. Election forecasting is ultimately a human challenge as much as a statistical one. Voters do not always behave rationally or consistently, and democratic processes are influenced by local issues, emotions, personalities and unforeseen events. The evidence suggests that chatbots are not yet reliable election forecasters. While they can synthesise information rapidly and may assist political analysts in identifying trends, their predictions remain dependent on existing data and are prone to error, omission and bias.

<ins id="1114307" data-width="908" data-height="258"></ins>

<ins id="1114300" data-width="728" data-height="90"></ins>

<ins id="1114308" data-width="468" data-height="60"></ins>

<ins id="1114299" data-width="300" data-height="250"></ins>

<ins id="1114305" data-width="250" data-height="250"></ins>

<ins id="1114302" data-width="133" data-height="139"></ins>

<ins id="1114303" data-width="125" data-height="125"></ins>

<ins id="1114301" data-width="160" data-height="600"></ins>

Can chatbots predict election results?
