How? I don\u2019t know, but it\u2019s coming,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Two wholesalers interviewed by AFP on condition of anonymity said they are still sourcing from Iran, notably via Omani ports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t export from the Emirates anymore, but we can still bring in certain goods,\u201d one of them said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Yasser\u2019s saffron shop, the precious spice arrives by air from Mashhad, in northeastern Iran, thanks to the resumption of air links after a brief interruption.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Dubai\u2019s Iranian community \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Dubai is home to a large Iranian community, estimated at several hundred thousand people, which has contributed to the emirate\u2019s commercial development and weathered the various periods of tension with Tehran.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the US tightened its sanctions against the Islamic republic in 2012, \u201cthose in Dubai managed to convince their partners in Abu Dhabi that the trade, regardless of the sanctions, needed to continue because it was contributing to the UAE economy,\u201d Mehran Haghirian of the London-based Bourse &amp;amp; Bazaar Foundation think tank told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the UAE was the main entry point for goods into Iran, accounting for more than 30 percent of imports, worth $21 billion.<\/p>\n<p>It was also Iran\u2019s third-largest customer, absorbing nearly 12 percent of its exports, worth more than $7 billion, according to the World Trade Organization.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dubai is an important financial hub for Iranian businesses, with Washington accusing it of being a key node in financial networks used to circumvent sanctions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As part of its policy of economic pressure on Iran, the United States announced new measures at the end of August targeting Iran\u2019s trading partners, and sanctioned the director of the Dubai branch of Iran\u2019s Bank Melli.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The institution nonetheless continues to welcome clients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been under sanctions for years,\u201d sighs an employee at one of two branches in Dubai.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Priorities change\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>For Haghirian, Abu Dhabi\u2019s announcement of the suspension of relations with Iran is part of efforts to bring Tehran back to the negotiating table, and is meant to show the Gulf country\u2019s alignment with the United States.<\/p>\n<p>But it will not necessarily cut informal flows or exchanges between private actors, which are deeply rooted on both sides of the Gulf.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the long run, a lasting rupture could even weigh on Dubai\u2019s economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s difficult to just suddenly cut it off and not have an impact, leave a huge chunk. That chunk cannot easily be replaced,\u201d he stressed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But at a conference in Dubai, Emirati businessman and former senior official in the emirate, Nasser al-Shaikh, downplayed these concerns, saying that Iran is \u201cno longer as important to the emirate\u2019s economy as it was a few years ago\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe relationship was mutually beneficial,\u201d he conceded, but \u201cin times of war, priorities change\u2026 National security comes first\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In his shop in Bur Dubai, Asaadi is convinced that trade will survive the current crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see the water there?\u201d he said, gesturing at the Gulf separating the UAE from the coasts of southern Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWater can break a mountain.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
