A new study from online trading platform Taurex suggests that many investors have been calculating those returns incorrectly for years. By taking account of every stock split since companies first listed, the analysis reveals a different picture of long-term investing success, one where retailers, restaurants and soft drinks sometimes outperform the technology giants that usually dominate investment headlines.

The findings also provide a reminder that while attention often focuses on the next hot listing, the greatest fortunes in stock market history have often been built through patience rather than excitement.

Most people judge long-term stock performance by comparing a company’s IPO price with its current trading price. The problem, according to the Taurex analysis, is that this approach ignores stock splits. A stock split increases the number of shares an investor owns while proportionally reducing the price of each share. Over decades, repeated stock splits can dramatically increase the number of shares held by early investors.

The study examined 18 major publicly traded companies, tracing each firm’s IPO price, every subsequent stock split and the resulting value today. Rather than simply comparing then and now prices, researchers calculated how many shares one original IPO share would have become after all stock splits. The resulting rankings produce some surprising winners.

Walmart takes the crown

At the top of the list is Walmart, a company rarely associated with spectacular investment returns. Walmart went public on 1 October 1970 at an offer price of $16.50 per share. Since then, the retailer has conducted 12 stock splits, transforming a single original share into 6,144 shares. Based on an August 2026 share price of $104.34, that original share would now be worth approximately $641,000. The effect becomes even more dramatic when viewed through the lens of a larger investment. According to the analysis, a $1,000 investment at the time of the IPO would now be worth roughly $38.9 million. That figure places Walmart comfortably ahead of every other company examined in the study.

Second place belongs to a company that predates the modern technology industry by generations. The Coca-Cola Company listed in September 1919 at $40 per share. Over more than a century of public trading, the company implemented 11 stock splits that transformed one original share into 9,216 shares. Today, those shares are worth approximately $830,000. For an investor who placed $1,000 into Coca-Cola at the time of the IPO, the current value would be around $20.8 million.

Third place in the rankings is held by Home Depot. The home improvement retailer went public in September 1981 at just $12 per share. Through a combination of strong business growth and multiple stock splits, a $1,000 IPO investment would now be worth approximately $9.5 million.

Perhaps even more surprising is fourth-placed McDonald’s. Often viewed as a defensive and relatively conservative investment, McDonald’s listed in April 1965 at $22.50 per share. Twelve stock splits later, one original share has become 729 shares. The result is a theoretical $1,000 IPO investment now valued at around $8.6 million. This puts McDonald’s ahead of several technology companies commonly regarded as among the greatest investments of the modern era.

Few companies have attracted more investor attention over the past decade than Nvidia. The semiconductor firm’s graphics processing units became central to the artificial intelligence boom, helping transform Nvidia into one of the world’s most valuable companies. Yet despite that extraordinary growth, Nvidia finishes only fifth in the ranking.

The company went public in January 1999 at $12 per share, during the height of the dot-com era. Following six stock splits, one IPO share has become 480 shares. According to the study, a $1,000 investment at the IPO would today be worth approximately $8.4 million. Although several non-technology firms occupy the highest positions, technology companies still account for much of the upper tier.

One of the most interesting conclusions from the research concerns the relationship between growth rates and investment duration. According to a Taurex analyst, investors often focus on annual growth rates while underestimating the significance of time. For example, newer high-growth companies may achieve stronger annualised returns than Walmart achieved during much of its history. Yet those businesses have not had the same opportunity to compound wealth over half a century.

The lesson is particularly relevant given current attention surrounding recently listed high-profile firms and anticipated future IPOs. The analyst argues that initial trading enthusiasm frequently dominates discussions about public offerings, while the factors that create transformational wealth are often much less dramatic. Simply put, holding a successful company for several decades can matter more than finding the most exciting stock at a particular moment.

<div style="display: grid;
