Students now encounter AI-powered tools through search engines, learning platforms, homework assistants and social media. The resulting debate has often centred on one question: how can schools stop students from using AI to cheat?

According to education experts from Virginia Tech, this may be the wrong question. Instead of focusing primarily on detection, schools should concentrate on helping students develop critical thinking, information literacy and ethical decision-making skills that allow them to use AI responsibly. This perspective has important implications for Canada, where schools, teachers and policymakers are grappling with the rapid expansion of generative AI technologies. Based on reporting from Virginia Tech’s education specialists, the discussion is increasingly moving from prohibition towards responsible integration.

One of the challenges facing schools is that AI is already embedded within the digital ecosystem that students use every day. Attempting to eliminate AI entirely from education may be both impractical and counterproductive. Amy Allen, an associate professor in education at Virginia Tech, argues for what she calls “technocuriosity”, encouraging teachers, parents and students to explore AI with a balanced and informed mindset rather than fear or blind acceptance. According to Allen, this means understanding both what AI can do and the limitations, biases and inaccuracies it may contain.

This perspective aligns with broader discussions taking place in Canada. The Government of Canada has already recognised the importance of digital and AI literacy through initiatives supporting responsible AI development and public awareness. The federal government’s approach to artificial intelligence emphasises transparency, accountability and informed use rather than rejection of the technology. The challenge for schools is therefore not merely to identify AI-generated work but to ensure that students understand when the technology supports learning and when it undermines genuine understanding.

Why critical thinking matters more than ever

The emergence of AI has exposed weaknesses in some traditional assessment methods. Assignments that ask students to produce generic summaries, simple descriptions or routine essays can often be completed using AI tools with minimal effort. This has prompted educators to rethink how learning is assessed. Allen suggests that assignments should place greater emphasis on reasoning, evidence evaluation and explaining thought processes. Instead of simply asking students to provide an answer, teachers can ask them to explain how they arrived at that answer and evaluate alternative interpretations.

Such approaches encourage students to engage actively with information rather than simply accepting AI-generated outputs as fact. This issue has particular relevance in Canada, where provinces have increasingly focused on developing competencies such as critical thinking, communication and problem-solving. For example, British Columbia’s curriculum framework places considerable emphasis on “core competencies” designed to prepare students for a rapidly changing world. AI may reinforce the need for these skills rather than diminish them.

In practice, students who can evaluate sources, identify inaccuracies and recognise bias may ultimately benefit more from AI than those who rely upon it uncritically.

Redesigning assessment for the AI era

The rise of generative AI may create an opportunity to improve educational practice. According to Pamela Gilchrist, Director of K-12 Initiatives at Virginia Tech, teachers can redesign assignments in ways that make student learning more visible. Examples include requiring multiple drafts, asking students to discuss their thinking process, or completing portions of assignments under supervised classroom conditions.

The objective is not simply to identify academic dishonesty. Rather, it is to reinforce concepts such as ownership, honesty and intellectual development. Many Canadian educators are already exploring similar approaches. Several school boards and universities have issued guidance encouraging transparency around AI use while maintaining expectations for original student work. Instead of policing the technology, institutions increasingly seek to establish clear boundaries regarding acceptable use. The result may be a shift away from assessment models that reward memorisation and towards those that evaluate judgement, creativity and understanding.

AI as a learning partner

An important aspect of the Virginia Tech perspective is that AI should not automatically be viewed as a threat. Allen suggests that educators think of AI as a “conversation partner” rather than an “answer machine”. Used appropriately, AI can help students organise ideas, explore unfamiliar topics and receive feedback on their work. Gilchrist recommends a simple framework: “Ask. Check. Create. Explain.”

This framework addresses one of the most significant educational risks associated with AI: the temptation to replace thinking with automation. When students critically evaluate AI-generated content rather than passively accepting it, the technology becomes a tool for learning rather than a substitute for learning.

Canada is particularly well positioned to shape this discussion. The country has established itself as a global centre for artificial intelligence research, with internationally recognised AI institutes including the Vector Institute, Mila. At the same time, Canadian policymakers continue to debate how AI should be governed in contexts ranging from business and healthcare to education.

Schools represent one of the most important arenas for this discussion because today’s students will enter workplaces where AI is likely to play a routine role. Employers increasingly value skills that AI cannot easily replicate, including critical reasoning, ethical judgement, communication and creativity. Educational systems that focus exclusively on preventing AI use may fail to prepare students for that reality. Instead, students must learn how to collaborate effectively with intelligent systems while preserving independent thought and intellectual integrity.

<div style="display: grid;
