It is also an economic, technological, and organizational challenge. Longer life expectancy is changing the demands placed on health systems, families, employers and communities, while advances in digital health, personalized medicine and cognitive science are creating new possibilities for how people experience later life.

The demographic shift is substantial. The World Health Organization projects that by 2030, one in six people worldwide will be 60 or older, and that the population in this age group will reach approximately 2.1 billion by 2050. At the same time, dementia and other age-associated conditions are increasing the need for long-term support, caregiver resources and new approaches to prevention and care.

These changes are bringing together fields that were once more distinct: clinical science, cognitive health, healthcare technology, entrepreneurship and business strategy. They are also creating opportunities for professionals whose careers cross several of those domains.

Dr. John DenBoer is one example. His professional background began in clinical psychology and neuropsychology, with subsequent work focused on dementia, cognitive intervention and aging. More recently, his interests have expanded toward healthcare innovation, technology and business-related applications within the aging sector. That progression reflects a broader shift occurring throughout healthcare itself.

Why aging is becoming a healthcare and economic challenge

Population aging is occurring on a scale that will require significant changes in healthcare delivery. According to the World Health Organization, the proportion of the world’s population over age 60 is expected to increase from approximately 12 percent in 2015 to 22 percent in 2050. Longer life is an important achievement, but longevity also increases the period during which individuals may require treatment for chronic illnesses, cognitive impairment or functional limitations.

Dementia illustrates the magnitude of the challenge. WHO estimates that 57 million people worldwide were living with dementia in 2021 and that nearly 10 million new cases occur each year. Dementia is also a major cause of disability and dependency among older adults. The economic consequences extend well beyond direct medical expenses: WHO estimated the global cost of dementia at $1.3 trillion in 2019, with roughly half attributable to care provided by family members and other informal caregivers.

The challenge is therefore not simply treating more patients. Healthcare systems must determine how to preserve function, support caregivers, coordinate services and help older adults remain independent for as long as possible.

That requires healthcare innovation at multiple levels. New models may incorporate preventive health, cognitive health, technology-assisted monitoring, caregiver support, home-based services and better coordination between medical and community resources.

The United States is already experimenting with such approaches. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience, or GUIDE, model emphasizes coordinated dementia care, caregiver education and support, respite services, and helping people remain safely in their homes.

Aging therefore represents both a healthcare challenge and a design problem: how can existing systems be reorganized around the realities of longer lives?

From neuropsychology to a broader understanding of aging

The intersection between aging and cognitive health has been a recurring theme in John W. DenBoer’s professional work.

DenBoer earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Montana and subsequently completed advanced clinical training involving neuropsychology. His professional curriculum vitae describes an APA-approved internship through the Boston Consortium, with training associated with VA Boston Healthcare System, Harvard University and Boston University, followed by an APPCN-approved postdoctoral fellowship in clinical neuropsychology at Barrow Neurological Institute.

His early clinical work included neuropsychological assessment involving geriatric populations and an emphasis on differential diagnosis and early-stage dementia detection. That background placed cognitive assessment at the center of his initial professional perspective.

Over time, however, the focus expanded from assessment toward intervention.

One of Dr. John DenBoer’s peer-reviewed publications, Cognitive Intervention for Early Stage Dementia: Research and Techniques, appeared in Applied Neuropsychology: Adult. The review examined emerging research involving cognitive prevention and intervention for mild cognitive impairment and early-stage dementia and considered future research and clinical directions.

DenBoer also published with Dharma Singh Khalsa on emerging cognitive-intervention techniques and developed work associated with the Strategic Memory Alzheimer’s Rehabilitation Training, or SMART Memory, approach.

The significance of this line of inquiry extends beyond any individual intervention. It reflects an important evolution in thinking about cognitive aging: assessment remains essential, but identifying impairment is only one part of the problem. Researchers, clinicians and healthcare organizations increasingly need to consider what can be done earlier in the process and how interventions might fit into broader systems of care.

That perspective has become more relevant as dementia science has moved toward risk reduction and earlier action. Updated WHO guidance released in 2026 states that as much as 45 percent of dementia risk may be attributable to potentially modifiable factors across the life course.

Cognitive health and the search for better healthcare models

Cognitive health occupies an unusual position within modern healthcare. Cognitive decline can develop gradually, while traditional healthcare is often organized around identifiable illnesses, episodes of treatment, and reimbursement for specific services. The result is a mismatch between the long-term nature of brain aging and a system historically designed to respond when a problem has already become clinically significant.

Prevention and early intervention offer a different framework.

This does not mean that dementia can simply be prevented through individual behavior. Dementia includes multiple diseases and biological processes, and there is currently no universal cure. But contemporary evidence increasingly supports addressing modifiable risk factors across the lifespan.

WHO identifies physical inactivity, smoking, harmful alcohol use, social isolation and several cardiovascular and metabolic conditions among potentially modifiable factors associated with dementia risk. Its 2026 guidance emphasizes that risk reduction can involve physical activity, healthy diet, management of blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose, social and cognitive engagement, treatment of hearing loss where appropriate and reduction of other environmental and behavioral risks.

For Dr. John DenBoer, the concept of intervention has historically included cognitive activity itself. His published review examined literature concerning cognitive intervention for mild cognitive impairment and early-stage dementia. That work fits within a broader question now confronting aging research: how can evidence about risk, behavior, and cognitive function be translated into practical programs that people can actually use?

Healthcare technology potentially changes the scale of that question.

Digital platforms can make cognitive exercises, education, monitoring and behavioral interventions available outside conventional clinical settings. Remote technologies can also help families and providers identify changes over time rather than relying exclusively on occasional office visits.

Technology, however, does not eliminate the need for evidence. A digital intervention should not be assumed effective merely because it is accessible or engaging. Healthcare innovation requires validation, measurable outcomes, privacy protections and careful consideration of the population being served.

The challenge is therefore not simply inventing more healthcare technology. It is connecting scientifically defensible ideas with delivery models capable of reaching people consistently, affordably and responsibly.

Where healthcare innovation meets business

This translation from research to practical delivery is where healthcare and business increasingly intersect.

Healthcare entrepreneurship differs from entrepreneurship in many consumer industries. A healthcare product must satisfy more than market demand. Depending on the product, developers may need to address clinical evidence, regulatory requirements, reimbursement, patient safety, privacy, provider adoption, and integration with existing workflows.

A technically impressive product can fail because it does not solve a meaningful problem for patients or providers. Conversely, an evidence-based intervention may never achieve broad impact if it lacks a viable delivery and business model.

This gap between scientific knowledge and implementation is particularly relevant to aging. The market includes healthcare providers, insurers, senior living organizations, home-care companies, families, caregivers, technology companies and older adults themselves. Each group defines value differently.

Dr. John DenBoer’s professional trajectory has increasingly moved into this intersection between healthcare knowledge and business execution. His background in neuropsychology and cognitive health provides one perspective on the underlying problems, while his more recent healthcare consulting and business work reflects questions about how products and services can be developed, positioned and implemented.

The distinction is important. Clinical expertise does not automatically produce business expertise, just as business expertise does not automatically provide an understanding of clinical science. Healthcare innovation often requires teams capable of integrating both.

For aging-related businesses, that integration can be particularly valuable. A company developing cognitive-health technology, for example, needs to understand its users, the scientific basis of its intervention, the practical realities faced by caregivers and providers, the economics of customer acquisition, reimbursement possibilities and how outcomes will be measured.

Healthcare consulting in this environment becomes less about giving generic business advice and more about translating between disciplines.

The organizations most likely to succeed may be those that can connect clinical validity, user needs, technological capability and sustainable economics rather than treating those elements as separate problems.

Dr. John DenBoer’s evolving professional focus

Viewed chronologically, DenBoer’s career can be understood as a progression across related fields rather than a departure from one profession for another:

Neuropsychology → Cognitive Health → Aging → Healthcare → Business and Consulting

His earlier professional work centered on clinical neuropsychology, neuropsychological assessment and dementia. Research and publications then placed greater emphasis on cognitive intervention and the possibility of addressing cognitive decline earlier.

Entrepreneurial work broadened the question again. Instead of considering cognitive health solely through the relationship between clinician and patient, the issue became one of delivery: how could an intervention be made accessible to larger populations?

That question naturally introduces technology and business models.

Today, Dr. John DenBoer’s professional interests increasingly sit at the intersection of aging, healthcare innovation and business consulting. His current professional materials describe a focus on helping organizations in the aging field, including work involving digital approaches intended to support cognitive functioning.

That evolution mirrors a broader development within healthcare. Many important healthcare problems are no longer addressed solely inside hospitals, clinics or research laboratories. Solutions may emerge through startups, digital-health companies, community organizations, home-based care models, insurers and partnerships among universities and businesses.

John DenBoer’s background provides a case study in how expertise can move across these boundaries.

The relevance of earlier neuropsychological experience is not that it provides answers to every healthcare-business question. Rather, it creates familiarity with the problems underlying the market: cognitive decline, aging, patient behavior, assessment and the difficulty of translating research into everyday practice.

The business challenge is determining how to build systems around those problems without losing sight of the people they are intended to serve.

Healthcare innovation in the Milwaukee Area

That intersection has particular relevance in Wisconsin and the Milwaukee region.

Wisconsin faces many of the same demographic pressures seen nationally. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services estimated that approximately 120,000 state residents were living with Alzheimer’s disease in 2020 and projected the number to reach approximately 130,000 by 2025. The department also reports roughly 198,000 dementia caregivers in Wisconsin providing an estimated 206 million hours of unpaid care annually.

Meanwhile, Milwaukee has a developing healthcare-innovation infrastructure.

The region includes the Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Marquette University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Concordia University Wisconsin, Versiti and major healthcare organizations. Collaborative initiatives through the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin connect several of these institutions around research translation and healthcare innovation.

Wisconsin has also received federal recognition as a Biohealth Tech Hub focused on personalized medicine. The U.S. Economic Development Administration’s designation includes the Milwaukee-Waukesha metropolitan area and emphasizes capabilities involving health data, artificial intelligence, medical technology and advanced manufacturing.

These resources create an environment in which healthcare entrepreneurship can connect with academic research, technology commercialization and business development.

For Dr. John DenBoer, whose current professional connection is centered in the Milwaukee area and nearby Elm Grove, the regional ecosystem creates a logical setting for work involving aging, healthcare technology and healthcare consulting.

The opportunity extends beyond any individual consultant or company. Wisconsin’s aging population creates demand for better dementia care, caregiver support, aging-in-place solutions and technologies capable of improving health and independence. At the same time, the Milwaukee area’s universities, healthcare institutions and entrepreneurial organizations provide infrastructure capable of helping translate ideas into viable products and services.

Technology, aging and the future of cognitive health

The next stage of healthcare innovation in aging will likely depend less on a single breakthrough than on the integration of multiple technologies and care models.

Remote monitoring may allow healthcare teams to observe meaningful changes between appointments. Digital cognitive tools could help researchers and providers measure aspects of cognitive performance longitudinally. Artificial intelligence may assist with pattern recognition and personalized interventions. Telehealth and home-based technologies can reduce geographic barriers and support aging in place.

Personalized healthcare is particularly relevant because aging is heterogeneous. Two people of the same chronological age may have very different cognitive, physical and functional profiles. WHO emphasizes that there is no single “typical” older person; some individuals retain substantial capacity at advanced ages while others experience significant decline much earlier.

Technology could help healthcare systems respond to those differences.

But enthusiasm should remain proportional to evidence. Cognitive-health technology raises questions about clinical validation, data security, accessibility, algorithmic bias and the consequences of incorrectly identifying someone as cognitively impaired. Older adults also vary substantially in digital literacy and access.

The future of cognitive health therefore depends on responsible implementation as much as technological capability.

The most useful innovation may be technology that strengthens human care rather than attempts to replace it, giving individuals, caregivers and professionals better information, more continuous support and earlier opportunities to respond.

For aging-related healthcare organizations, this creates a demanding but potentially productive intersection of science, technology and business. Products must be clinically meaningful, usable in real-world environments and economically sustainable.

Conclusion

Population aging is forcing healthcare systems to reconsider how cognitive health, chronic illness, caregiving and independence are addressed over the lifespan. Dementia makes the urgency particularly visible, but the larger issue extends to how society designs healthcare for longer lives.

The emerging response increasingly combines prevention, personalized care, healthcare technology, caregiver support, aging-in-place strategies and new business models.

Dr. John DenBoer’s professional path from neuropsychology and cognitive intervention to aging, healthcare innovation and business-related work reflects this broader convergence. Rather than treating clinical science, technology and healthcare business as unrelated disciplines, the evolving aging economy increasingly requires people and organizations capable of working across them.

The central question is ultimately larger than any single technology or professional career: how can advances in knowledge be translated into systems that help people live longer while preserving cognitive health, independence and quality of life?

<div style="display: grid;
