Consumer demand for convenience, widespread smartphone adoption and substantial venture-capital investment transformed app-based delivery from a niche service into part of everyday urban life. In 2026, however, the sector is confronting many of the same economic pressures affecting the wider technology industry. New analysis supplied by TradingPlatforms indicates that food and grocery delivery companies recorded 3,921 layoffs across seven businesses during the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The TradingPlatforms study draws upon company announcements, US Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filings, and reporting from technology-industry sources. Its figures place food and grocery delivery among the sectors significantly affected by the continuing wave of technology-related job reductions. Broader trackers such as Layoffs.fyi and the Intellizence 2026 layoffs tracker show that restructuring has continued across technology, retail, finance and other digitally dependent industries<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Canada, the movement is significant because food-delivery platforms have become deeply embedded in urban life and form an important part of the country\u2019s expanding gig economy. As delivery businesses automate more of their operations, questions are emerging about how artificial intelligence, robotics and the pursuit of profitability will affect Canadian workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The TradingPlatforms analysis identifies workforce reductions across several regions. Among the latest cited reductions was the closure of a HelloFresh distribution centre in Swedesboro, New Jersey, affecting 374 employees. The facility distributed meal kits sold under the HelloFresh, Green Chef and EveryPlate brands. The largest reported reduction in the delivery category came from Chinese food-delivery company Meituan, which reportedly removed up to 2,000 positions from business areas including food delivery, instant retail and commercialisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the UK, online grocery and retail-technology company Ocado announced plans to remove approximately 1,000 positions, equivalent to about five percent of its worldwide workforce, as part of a \u00a3150 million cost-reduction programme. Approximately half of the anticipated reductions were expected to affect research and development. Spain-based Glovo initially proposed cutting as many as 750 delivery roles across 60 cities. Following negotiations with trade unions, the final figure was reportedly reduced to 436. Smaller reductions were also reported at Breadfast in Egypt and GoLemon in Israel. In the US, food-automation company Picnic wound down operations after developing robotic systems for preparing pizzas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, the examples illustrate that the pressures are not confined to one market or business model. Meal-kit providers, grocery-delivery businesses, platform operators and food-automation developers are all being forced to reconsider costs, geographic coverage and operational structure.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-why-the-trend-matters-to-canada\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why the trend matters to Canada<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada\u2019s delivery economy connects technology platforms, restaurants, retailers, warehouses and independent workers. That makes the country sensitive to changes in the economics of multinational delivery businesses, even where the current job reductions are announced elsewhere. Food delivery is also part of a much wider Canadian labour-market debate. A federal consultation on labour protections for gig workers reported that approximately 250,000 Canadians performed work through digital platforms in 2022, with ride-sharing and delivery among the most common activities. The federal report also notes that the share of Canadians performing gig work grew from 5.5 percent in 2005 to approximately 10 percent in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This workforce does not correspond neatly with the permanent employees captured by conventional corporate layoff announcements. Many delivery drivers and couriers work through platform-based arrangements rather than occupying conventional salaried positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consequently, technological or operational restructuring may affect Canadian employment in several ways. A company may remove corporate or customer-service jobs, reduce warehouse staffing, withdraw from a city, alter payment algorithms or reduce the volume of work offered to independent couriers. Not every employment impact will appear in a headline layoff total.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-ai-is-changing-delivery-operations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI is changing delivery operations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important to food delivery because the sector depends upon making thousands of rapid logistical decisions. AI can support demand forecasting, inventory control, delivery allocation, route planning and customer-service automation. These applications can help a business anticipate where orders will originate, determine how much stock is required and allocate deliveries more efficiently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada\u2019s wider food sector is already adopting such technologies. An overview from Food in Canada describes Canadian applications of artificial intelligence, robotics and automation in supply-chain optimisation, production forecasting, food-quality assessment, packaging and material handling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The potential benefits include lower operating costs, reduced waste, more accurate forecasting and improved delivery performance. Yet the same efficiencies can reduce demand for certain administrative, support and manual roles. Customer-service work may be particularly exposed where routine enquiries can be answered automatically. Warehouse roles may also change as picking, sorting and movement systems become more automated. At the same time, demand may grow for workers able to maintain robotic systems, analyse logistics data and oversee automated decision-making.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Automation is no longer restricted to back-office software or warehouses. Canadian companies are also experimenting with autonomous last-mile delivery. In 2025, Robot.com, formerly known as Kiwibot, announced a food-delivery pilot in Markham, Ontario, involving Canadian automation company Real Life Robotics and delivery network Skip. The project involved autonomous robots operating within a defined local area. The announcement described the initiative as an opportunity to explore robot-assisted urban delivery in Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such trials indicate the direction in which the industry may be moving, but they do not necessarily imply the rapid disappearance of delivery work. Autonomous systems must function safely in changing weather, interact with pedestrians, navigate street infrastructure and comply with local regulations. The more immediate prospect is a mixed delivery network in which human couriers, automated warehouses, predictive software and delivery robots operate together.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-profitability-remains-the-main-pressure\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Profitability remains the main pressure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although AI attracts attention, TradingPlatforms analyst Stanislava Savisheva cautions against treating the technology as the sole explanation for the sector\u2019s job losses. According to the supplied analysis, weaker demand, facility closures, unsuccessful business models and pressure to achieve profitability remain the principal causes of the 2026 reductions. AI is one component of a wider effort to make delivery operations more efficient. This distinction is important. The delivery industry expanded rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when consumer behaviour changed and investment capital was relatively abundant. As markets normalised, businesses faced the difficult task of converting expansion into sustainable earnings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wider history of food-delivery layoffs supports this interpretation. A Statista overview of worldwide food-delivery start-up layoffs identifies lower post-pandemic demand and intense market competition among the pressures affecting the sector. \u00a0Technology can enable restructuring, but it does not remove the underlying commercial issues of customer acquisition costs, delivery margins, warehouse utilisation and competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The employment implications of automation are unfolding while Canadian provinces develop new rules for platform-based work. British Columbia\u2019s gig-worker regulations came into effect on 3 September 2024. The provincial framework applies employment standards and workers\u2019 compensation protections to app-based ride-hailing and delivery-service workers. Ontario\u2019s Digital Platform Workers\u2019 Rights Act took effect on 1 July 2025. A legal overview of the Ontario and British Columbia regulatory frameworks explains that both provinces have introduced protections for workers performing delivery, courier and ride-sharing services through digital platforms, although their legal approaches differ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These developments mean that automation in Canada will not take place in a regulatory vacuum.
