A PSP still slides into a jacket pocket. Tito from Macho Nacho Productions took that contrast and rebuilt an original Sony PSP-1000 as a device he calls Steam Portable, a pocket shell that can stream his Steam library and run retro emulation. Sony never sold anything like it. He used OtherMod’s latest PSPi 6 kit, a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4, an 800×480 replacement screen, and a UV printer to stamp Steam branding onto the plastic.

Adam from OtherMod built the PSPi 6 as an open-source board that replaces the PSP motherboard. Only the thick 1000-series shell works. Later skinny variants will not accept the board. The original face buttons, analog nub, shoulder triggers, speakers, power switch, wireless switch, status LEDs, and Wi-Fi antenna remain in situ. A donor console may be dead upon delivery; the old mainboard and factory LCD are laid aside. You still need the metal LCD bracket, rubber membranes, control panel, power board, and UMD door to make the finished unit resemble a PSP from the outside.

            PlayStation 5 Portal Remote Player – Midnight Black

Play Your Game Collection with Remote Play – PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console…

Cloud Streaming from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog – Discover an awesome library of PS5 games on the PlayStation Portal Remote Player with…

Cloud Streaming for PS5 Games in Your Library – With PlayStation Plus Premium, stream select digital PS5 games in Your Library from PlayStation Store…

Kit hardware includes a custom interface board priced between $75 and $125, a 4.3-inch 800×480 LCD powered by the Pi’s GPIO ports, a 3.7-volt LiPo pack with a JST connector (often approximately 2000 mAh), and a Pi Zero 2 W or Compute Module 4 on a tiny carrier. Tito chose a CM4 Lite, which stores data on a microSD card. The board charges at up to 1.35 amps by the original barrel jack or a mini-USB connector, has a real-time clock, and can operate on wall power without a battery. Audio from a Zero or CM4 is mono unless you connect the extra headphone daughterboard. Extra solder pads exist for two more buttons and a second stick, but there is currently no place for that extra stick in the stock shell.

This build feels current since software work on version 6 is ongoing. Adam redesigned drivers, cleaned up the coding, and now provides prebuilt images for RetroPie, Batocera, Lakka, and the default Raspberry Pi OS. Gamepad input is reported as a conventional PS3 controller, thus Steam and most emulators see the face buttons without any mapping. Long charge and discharge tests get the battery percentage closer to reality. New features include a mouse mode, automatic screen dimming, improved use of the original wireless switch and LEDs, an automated image builder, and diagnostic firmware for cards that fail to load. Steam Link is preconfigured on the RetroPie image that Tito used.

The looks come from a eufyMake E1 UV printer. Tito attached the matte back shell and piano-black face to the bed, used the program to measure height, and printed “Steam Portable,” a Steam logo, and ABXY labels in UV-cured ink. Small graphics took approximately five minutes. Ink adheres to plastic well enough for everyday use. He tried porcelain, aluminum, and wood on the same machine before moving on to electronics.

Assembly begins with a full teardown. The audio board enters the rear half first. The interface board slips into the USB port first, then the antenna cable is routed into the vacant UMD bay so that nothing pinches. The mid-frame is then applied for rigidity; the analog-stick contact pads require a short clearance check against neighboring metal before being covered by a conductive membrane. New LCD, bottom button bracket, and L/R triggers follow. Prior to snapping on the faceplate, the protective film is removed from the panel. CM4 is mounted to its carrier using a thermal pad and the original antenna. The Lite module houses a microSD card containing the OS image. The battery cable travels through a molded tube to the JST plug. The battery cover and UMD door close the shell. If you get the pre-soldered kit and carrier, you will not need to solder anything.

When closed, Steam Portable resembles a PSP with a brighter 800×480 screen. RetroPie supports the PlayStation 1 as well as a helpful collection of N64 and 16-bit libraries for the CM4. Steam can be accessed through Steam Link. Games run on a home PC, and video and input are transmitted via Wi-Fi. Following a one-time pairing, the handheld locates the PC on the same network. Tito utilized a UniFi travel router on café Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot when he was away from home to keep the connection on his home network. He sat in a coffee shop, playing Final Fantasy VII Remake on a little screen. Modern titles that require two analog sticks still require a linked Bluetooth pad, in this example a DualSense, because the PSP only had one nub. Steam recognizes that extra controller without additional effort. Connection quality determines whether the stream remains smooth or stutters.

<div style="display: grid;
