Unlike conventional chatbots, AI agents are designed to act. They can navigate websites, complete forms, conduct research, compare information across tabs, interact with software and, in some cases, make purchases. Vendors are increasingly promoting these systems as digital workers capable of carrying out tasks with minimal supervision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a new study suggests that the reality remains more complicated. Research from web data infrastructure provider Decodo examined 45 AI agents across ten different capabilities and found a significant gap between the promise of autonomous AI and its practical performance. The findings indicate that while agentic systems are improving rapidly, many remain far from ready to operate independently when business-critical decisions or financial transactions are involved. Such results raise an important question for organisations contemplating greater automation: how much autonomy should businesses really be willing to hand over to AI?<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-a-crowded-field-with-no-perfect-performer\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A crowded field with no perfect performer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study assessed a broad range of AI agents against capabilities including multi-step task execution, form filling, memory, cross-tab awareness, scheduling, transactional actions and safeguards surrounding irreversible actions. The strongest performers were Claude for Chrome and Amazon Nova Act, which each achieved 18 points out of a possible 20. Fellou and ChatGPT Desktop followed closely with scores of 17. Yet perhaps the most notable finding is that none of the tested systems achieved a perfect score.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is significant because AI marketing often creates the impression that autonomous agents are approaching human-level capability across a wide range of tasks. The Decodo analysis suggests that even the highest-ranked products continue to have limitations. Businesses evaluating these tools may therefore need to move beyond headline claims and examine specific capabilities relevant to their operational needs. As with many technologies, there is a considerable difference between performing well in a demonstration and delivering reliable outcomes in the complexity of real-world environments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One area where AI agents continue to struggle is perhaps the most commercially important: completing transactions. Among the ten capabilities assessed, transactional actions recorded the lowest average score of just 0.43 out of two. Many agents successfully navigated websites and progressed towards checkout pages. Far fewer demonstrated the ability to complete purchases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only six tools achieved top marks for transactional capability Amazon Nova Act, BrowserOS, ChatGPT Desktop, Minded, Sigma Browser, and Skyvern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ability to make a purchase represents only part of the challenge. The more important question is whether the system knows when to stop. When an AI system reaches a decision point involving financial commitment, the transmission of sensitive information or another irreversible action, most experts argue that human approval should remain part of the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Decodo findings suggest that this safeguard remains inconsistent. Only two tools, Amazon Nova Act and ChatGPT Desktop, were documented as both completing purchases and pausing for explicit user confirmation before the transaction was finalised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A system capable of spending money without seeking approval may increase efficiency, but it also increases risk. Ordering the wrong inventory, purchasing duplicate licences, subscribing to an unnecessary service or entering incorrect payment information are mistakes that could generate immediate financial consequences. For organisations deploying autonomous agents, confirmation workflows may prove just as important as the underlying automation itself.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-automation-without-supervision\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Automation without supervision<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study identified another area of concern involving multi-step workflows. Thirty-five of the assessed agents documented the ability to chain together multiple actions in pursuit of a larger objective. Such capabilities are central to the vision of agentic AI. The promise is that users can assign a goal rather than a series of individual tasks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the findings suggest safeguards sometimes lag behind capability. According to the study, 51 percent of agents capable of multi-step task execution do not document any confirmation step before irreversible actions. The concerns become more pronounced when background execution is introduced. Seventeen systems were found capable of operating without an active user session. Seven combine that capability with no documented confirmation requirements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means an AI agent could theoretically continue progressing through workflows while the user is no longer actively monitoring activities. While such autonomy offers productivity benefits, it also increases the potential consequences of mistakes. In traditional computing environments, automation errors are often confined to predefined scripts. Agentic systems introduce greater flexibility, but that flexibility may also create more opportunities for unexpected outcomes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ability to understand context is critical to autonomous behaviour. One aspect of this is cross-tab awareness, the capability to maintain awareness of information distributed across multiple browser tabs. Humans perform this task effortlessly. Someone researching suppliers, comparing products or examining business information routinely moves between numerous pages while maintaining overall context.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cross-tab awareness achieved an average score of only 0.66 out of two. The strongest performers were browser-native systems integrated directly into the browsing environment. Tools such as Claude for Chrome, Gemini within Chrome, Opera\u2019s AI assistants and several browser extensions performed particularly well. This highlights an important architectural trend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Embedding AI directly within a browser may provide advantages over standalone systems attempting to interpret webpages from an external perspective. As businesses increasingly expect agents to conduct research, monitor competitors and gather market intelligence, contextual awareness will become increasingly important.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-security-remains-a-significant-concern\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Security remains a significant concern<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rise of autonomous AI also introduces fresh security questions. Several leading AI companies and cybersecurity researchers have highlighted vulnerabilities involving prompt injection attacks. In these scenarios, hidden instructions embedded within websites, documents or emails can influence how an AI agent behaves. For a conventional chatbot, the consequences might be relatively limited. For an agent capable of making purchases, submitting forms or accessing company systems, the implications become considerably more serious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Security researchers continue to warn that AI systems can potentially be manipulated into performing unintended actions if appropriate safeguards are not in place. The challenge becomes particularly important in enterprise environments where agents may interact with confidential data, customer information or financial systems. This is one reason why many organisations continue to favour a \u201chuman-in-the-loop\u201d model, even as automation capabilities become increasingly sophisticated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
