A whole minute of bliss! Is that really so little for the whole of a man\u2019s life?\u201d the narrator exclaims in one of the lines most quoted on social media, reflecting on the enduring value of brief bursts of joy.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Bowled over \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of comments on BookTok, a popular book community on TikTok, attest to the popularity of one of Russia\u2019s greatest novelists with the social media generation.<\/p>\n<p>It \u201cbowls you over: it\u2019s real life written in a poetic way,\u201d user @thayslaaaa commented.<\/p>\n<p>Paloma Lima, a 29-year-old influencer and fan of Russian literature, told AFP that young TikTok users came to her YouTube channel after reading \u201cWhite Nights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes sense\u201d because it\u2019s a \u201cshort and intense\u201d book and falls into one of the most popular tropes on TikTok, she said, citing popular narratives such as \u201cfriends becoming lovers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Russia, the phenomenon is a source of both surprise and pride.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Moscow Book Fair, Ekaterina Kvitko, a 28-year-old author, said young Russian readers were far less enthused.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it\u2019s because it\u2019s a \u201cstory about a protagonist who is alone, searching for some kind of love, some crutch to lean on. Maybe teenagers in the West are living in that state right now,\u201d she mused.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Criticism or advertising? \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhite Nights\u201d has emerged as a gateway book for Dostoevsky\u2019s work, with some young readers progressing onto more challenging novels, such as \u201cCrime and Punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an \u201cunexpected\u201d phenomenon, says Danilo Hora of Editora 34, reporting a 53 percent increase in sales of Dostoevsky\u2019s iconic tale of murder and guilt during the first seven months of the year.<\/p>\n<p>In an era when short TikTok and YouTube videos are being blamed for eroding attention spans and fueling a reading crisis, social media, it transpires, is creating new audiences for the classics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a reader is a very beautiful idea; it can even be marketed. There\u2019s an associated aesthetic that\u2019s spreading\u201d on TikTok, Nogueira said.<\/p>\n<p>Aesthetics are also driving demand for the physical book over the digital version.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt attracts more attention to have a wonderful cover than a Kindle,\u201d said Nogueira.<\/p>\n<p>For his video discussing the book he used an edition with a colorful pop-art cover of a couple kissing, which is sold out in several bookstores in Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n<p>Cecilia Rosas, a Brazilian researcher and translator of Russian literature, hailed the interest in the classics on social media.<\/p>\n<p>She stressed, however, the importance of distinguishing between literary criticism and what often passes for such on social media but which, in her view, amounts to \u201cadvertising.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>burs-app\/tmo\/cb\/hol<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
