Canada already has the talent and the ambition. Our job is to turn that potential into momentum.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The festival returns to Toronto Sept. 22-24 for its ninth year, with roughly 10,000 attendees expected at Meridian Hall and the St. Lawrence Centre.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year brings a new sovereign growth content track, exploring how Canada can create a stronger innovation economy while competing on a global scale. We\u2019ve noticed the rhetoric change there, so now I\u2019d like to see activity and action change there as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An August study from the Council of Canadian Innovators identified access to customers as one of four structural barriers companies hit as they scale.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founders told researchers that early domestic customers can be difficult to secure, with buyers wanting evidence of global customers first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zarzeczny hears the same frustration from founders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When they approach customers outside Canada, she says, one of the first questions is which Canadian companies are they working with?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to be that proof-point for startups and become their first customers, and then have them scale globally,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Anuradha-Dugal-Rihiannon-Rosalind-at-Elevate-Festival-Day-1-photo-by-The-Ferguson-Media-Collective_6530_-1200x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3861639\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5000292974472158;width:1200px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Anuradha-Dugal-Rihiannon-Rosalind-at-Elevate-Festival-Day-1-photo-by-The-Ferguson-Media-Collective_6530_-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Anuradha-Dugal-Rihiannon-Rosalind-at-Elevate-Festival-Day-1-photo-by-The-Ferguson-Media-Collective_6530_-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Anuradha-Dugal-Rihiannon-Rosalind-at-Elevate-Festival-Day-1-photo-by-The-Ferguson-Media-Collective_6530_-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Anuradha-Dugal-Rihiannon-Rosalind-at-Elevate-Festival-Day-1-photo-by-The-Ferguson-Media-Collective_6530_-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Anuradha-Dugal-Rihiannon-Rosalind-at-Elevate-Festival-Day-1-photo-by-The-Ferguson-Media-Collective_6530_-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Anuradha Dugal &amp; Rihiannon Rosalind at Elevate Festival 2025 \u2014 Photo by Ferguson Media Collective, courtesy of Elevate Festival<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CIOs choosing a cybersecurity provider or AI solution still have to choose the provider that can solve the problem while meeting the organization\u2019s requirements.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When they \u2018buy Canadian,\u2019 these purchases build both revenue for the provider, and are a valuable first customer that can be shown to another market, a sign of domestic credibility.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we spoke earlier this year about Canadian procurement, Keith Jansa, executive director of the Digital Governance Council (DGC) said that members also flagged early customer engagement as one of the best ways to strengthen Canadian companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHaving that first customer, for a CIO, it\u2019s about creating value back to the customer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elevate\u2019s goal is to put more of those potential buyers, founders, and investors within reach of each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour customers are everything,\u201d Zarzeczny says, adding that capital and customers \u201care the two most important ingredients for a startup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Canadian founders do secure capital and customers, the results can be globally competitive. But, according to Zarzeczny, Canadians are often too quiet about their own wins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI feel as Canadians we can be very negative at times and very down on ourselves,\u201d she said, pointing to recent story Kepler Communications, which has actively competed against global giants Amazon and Starlink, as the first company to offer commercial space data relay services.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-sovereignty-gets-practical\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sovereignty gets practical<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same buying decisions also raise another question Elevate is spending more time on this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How much of Canada\u2019s technology infrastructure should remain under Canadian control?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b\u200bTo illustrate the stakes, Zarzeczny points to a thought experiment published by the Canadian Shield Institute, titled \u201cA Day in the Life Without American Tech.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s exactly as it sounds, wherein the reader is asked to imagine an apocalyptic event taking out U.S. tech overnight. Zarzeczny describes it as a target list that can point someone toward relevant founders, customers, investors, or peers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The festival has also doubled the capacity of its meeting exchange program, where capital-ready early and growth-stage startups can get advice and build relationships with investors. Elevate says it will facilitate more than 750 curated one-on-one meetings, while Zarzeczny says 120 investors will be on site meeting founders looking for funding, advice, or mentorship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canadian founders need capital, companies need customers, and tech leaders are weighing sovereignty alongside cost, capability, and risk. While there\u2019s truth there, the \u201cincredible stories\u201d can sometimes be buried.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI call bullshit on a lot of these things,\u201d Zarzeczny says, about Canada\u2019s risk-averse reputation. \u201cI think we have incredible ambition. We have incredible talent, and we have founders across Canada who aren\u2019t listening to the noise. They are so heads-down in building category-defining companies here that I\u2019m super proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-final-shots\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final shots<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Canadian technology buyers can play a direct role in whether homegrown companies get the customers they need to scale.<\/li>\n<li>Sovereignty is increasingly showing up inside ordinary technology decisions about vendors, data, infrastructure, and ownership.<\/li>\n<li>Elevate\u2019s 2026 additions focus on what happens after people meet, from investor conversations to policies they can put to work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
