height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:0\">\n<p>John Ternus takes over as Apple\u2019s chief executive on Tuesday, inheriting a company that towers over the smartphone market but trails its rivals in artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>One of his biggest challenges will be balancing the company\u2019s dependence on China while parrying acute political pressure from the White House.<\/p>\n<p>The handover ends Tim Cook\u2019s 15-year run, replacing the operations specialist who built Apple\u2019s supply chain with the engineer who built its hardware.<\/p>\n<p>Ternus, 51, joined Apple\u2019s design team in 2001 and worked his way up to senior vice president of hardware engineering, reporting to Cook.<\/p>\n<p>He leads the engineering teams behind Apple\u2019s entire product lineup, including the iPhones that generate most of the company\u2019s revenue.<\/p>\n<p>He gets barely a week to settle in, with Apple holding its annual iPhone event on September 9, where it is expected to unveil its first foldable handset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTim Cook left the house in phenomenal order,\u201d said Dan Ives, partner and senior managing director at investment firm Yorkville Ives &amp;amp; Co.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut now it\u2019s about Ternus defining the AI chapter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ives expects the new chief executive to lean into what he knows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no reason to fix what\u2019s already working,\u201d he said, predicting Ternus will concentrate on hardware innovation while leaving Cook\u2019s supply chain intact.<\/p>\n<p>Some analysts had argued software chief Craig Federighi was the more logical pick for a company scrambling to catch up on AI.<\/p>\n<p>Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Creative Strategies, said that misreads how consumers actually adopt technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers are still buying hardware first, and it\u2019s going to be like that for a long time,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019re not going to discover the value of AI if you\u2019re not interested in the hardware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ternus earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and worked as an engineer at Virtual Research Systems before joining Apple.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3792924\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3792924\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3792924\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Apple-\u00a9AFP-1K-01-e1785466834827-800x524.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Apple-\u00a9AFP-1K-01-e1785466834827-800x524.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Apple-\u00a9AFP-1K-01-e1785466834827-768x503.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Apple-\u00a9AFP-1K-01-e1785466834827.jpg 1022w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3792924\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: \u2014 \u00a9 AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Inside the company he is credited with driving a push to make products more durable, reliable and resilient, and with design work that cut their carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p>The harder question is what kind of leader he becomes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven people that know him now don\u2019t know him as a CEO,\u201d Milanesi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou might know him as the head of engineering, but once you\u2019re CEO, things change. Your responsibility is bigger, your power is bigger. You\u2019re dancing a different kind of dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Learn on the job\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Nowhere is that gap wider than in the geopolitical role Cook excelled at, courting both Beijing and Donald Trump\u2019s White House to protect a supply chain that runs largely through China.<\/p>\n<p>Apple\u2019s manufacturing operation is among the most complex in corporate history, a web of hundreds of suppliers and assembly lines that Cook painstakingly built over decades.<\/p>\n<p>Cook in recent years began shifting some of the work elsewhere \u2014 iPhone assembly to India, other production to Vietnam \u2014 but the diversification has been gradual with China, one of Apple\u2019s biggest consumer markets, still anchoring the system.<\/p>\n<p>Complicating matters, Trump has repeatedly demanded Apple build iPhones on American soil, threatening tariffs on those made overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Cook avoided the heaviest blows of Trump\u2019s trade war by cultivating the president directly, making US investment commitments and political donations \u2014 all while also keeping Beijing onside.<\/p>\n<p>The tricky political terrain will be new for Ternus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows Apple Park like the back of his pocket in terms of hardware,\u201d Ives said of Ternus. \u201cBut on the global stage \u2014 that\u2019s probably one of the biggest areas where he\u2019s going to have to learn on the job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cook is not going far. He becomes executive chairman of Apple\u2019s board on the same day, with a mandate the company has said includes engaging policymakers around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was really clever,\u201d said Milanesi, arguing the arrangement frees Ternus from a role Cook has handled alone for years.<\/p>\n<p>The September 9 iPhone event will be the first public measure of the handover.<\/p>\n<p>A foldable iPhone would be the most significant redesign in years, and Ternus will be its face \u2014 eight days into the job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a moment that they created for him,\u201d Milanesi said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
