Yet new survey data suggest that many Canadians feel the gap between expectation and reality is widening, particularly when it comes to timely access to routine care. \u00a0According to this new report from MedExpress Canada, nearly half of Canadians (48%) waited longer than one week for their most recent routine medical appointment, despite only 23% believing that a wait of more than a week is reasonable. The findings point to a growing mismatch between what Canadians expect from their healthcare system and what they actually experience.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-expectations-versus-experience\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Expectations versus experience<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, waiting a week for a routine appointment may not seem especially concerning. However, public expectations tell a different story. Most people seek primary care when they have a health concern, a need for reassurance, or when managing a chronic condition. Delays can increase anxiety, postpone diagnosis, and potentially allow health conditions to worsen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MedExpress survey suggests that access challenges have become normalized within Canada\u2019s healthcare landscape. Long appointment waits were identified as the leading barrier to care by 64% of respondents, ahead of long emergency department waits (59%) and shortages of doctors and specialists (43%). \u00a0These concerns align with broader national data. Statistics Canada has highlighted the impact that delayed access to specialists can have on patient outcomes, including delayed diagnosis, treatment postponement, and increased healthcare system burdens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many Canadians, the issue is not simply inconvenience. It is the perception that accessing healthcare increasingly requires persistence, flexibility, and sometimes luck. The survey also highlights an enduring challenge within Canadian healthcare: geography.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada\u2019s vast size creates significant healthcare disparities between urban and rural communities. More than half of Canadians (54%) report travelling 30 minutes or longer to access specialist care, rising to 76% among rural residents. Additionally, 48% of rural Canadians believe their location places them at a disadvantage when trying to obtain healthcare services, compared with only 15% of urban residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These findings expose a persistent inequity. While healthcare coverage may be universal, healthcare accessibility is not always geographically equal. For patients living outside major metropolitan areas, obtaining specialist consultations often involves significant travel, time away from work, transportation costs, and logistical planning. In some cases, the burden may discourage individuals from seeking care altogether. The result is that where a person lives can influence how quickly and conveniently they receive medical attention, despite the overarching goal of equitable healthcare access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most striking finding from the report concerns public perceptions regarding wealth and healthcare access. According to data provided by MedExpress Canada, 37% of respondents reported believing that easy access to quality healthcare outside major metropolitan areas is associated with personal wealth. Whether or not this perception accurately reflects healthcare availability, it is significant in itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public confidence is a critical component of any healthcare system. When citizens begin to believe that financial resources determine ease of access, concerns emerge regarding fairness, equity, and social trust. Canada\u2019s healthcare model has long distinguished itself from systems where access may be more directly linked to personal finances. Therefore, perceptions that wealth can help overcome barriers, even through private consultations, travel options, supplementary insurance, or digital services, may indicate growing unease about the system\u2019s ability to meet demand consistently.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-family-doctor-challenge\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The family doctor challenge<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another important finding is that approximately one in five Canadians (21%) report not having a family doctor. \u00a0Primary care physicians remain the gateway to many healthcare services, including specialist referrals, chronic disease management, preventive care, and routine monitoring. Without a regular physician, patients often rely on walk-in clinics, emergency departments, virtual services, or fragmented care pathways. The shortage of family doctors has become an increasingly prominent issue across several provinces. As demand grows due to population aging and increasing healthcare complexity, recruitment and retention challenges continue to place pressure on primary care infrastructure. Without effective solutions, access bottlenecks may continue to worsen.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-can-digital-health-help\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can digital health help?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One potential avenue for improving access is the expansion of telemedicine and digital healthcare services. The MedExpress report notes that many Canadians are increasingly willing to consider online healthcare options, particularly where access barriers exist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Virtual consultations can reduce travel time, improve access for rural communities, and help address shortages in some primary care settings. Digital platforms may also provide faster access for routine consultations, prescription renewals, and follow-up appointments. However, technology is not a complete solution. Not all medical conditions can be assessed remotely, and digital healthcare depends upon internet connectivity, digital literacy, and integration with wider healthcare services. Healthcare experts generally view virtual care as a supplement rather than a replacement for traditional healthcare delivery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research from the Angus Reid Institute has shown that many Canadians believe healthcare access has deteriorated over the past decade and that structural reforms may be needed in addition to increased funding. \u00a0Long waits for routine care can contribute to delayed diagnoses, increased emergency department usage, worsening chronic disease outcomes, and higher overall healthcare costs. Patients who cannot readily access primary care may defer treatment until conditions become more severe and more expensive to manage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also workforce implications. Healthcare professionals continue to face staffing shortages, growing patient demand, and operational pressures. Addressing access challenges will likely require a combination of workforce expansion, better resource allocation, enhanced use of technology, and innovative care models. Perhaps most importantly, public trust is at stake.
