Google Cloud’s Cloud Threat Horizons Report H1 2026 found that third-party software vulnerabilities accounted for 44.5% of observed initial-access activity in H2 2025, compared with 2.9% in H1. The report also observed that the period between vulnerability disclosure and exploitation had contracted from weeks to days. These findings may suggest that security considerations increasingly extend across connected suppliers, SaaS environments, and software ecosystems.

That expanding exposure is arriving alongside greater federal scrutiny. According to Reuters, the Department of Justice’s Civil Cyber-Fraud Initiative recovered $52 million through nine cybersecurity-related settlements in 2025, with enforcement involving defense contractors and NIST security controls. Reuters also reported on the Initiative’s first criminal indictment, involving allegations that a contractor misrepresented its implementation of required controls. For federal suppliers, these developments may raise the importance of maintaining defensible security practices and documentation as part of everyday operations.

The regulatory environment has also illustrated a practical capacity challenge. In July 2026, the Department of War announced the suspension of CMMC Phase II requirements that had been scheduled for November, while retaining Phase I self-assessment requirements and initiating a broader review of the program. The department cited the need to reduce barriers for small, medium, and non-traditional businesses while maintaining cybersecurity protections. The development may point toward a broader effort to reconcile rigorous security expectations with the resources available to smaller suppliers.

FedRAMP’s evolution provides another indication of this transition. Under the FedRAMP Consolidated Rules for 2026, FedRAMP 20x became a widely available certification path, with greater emphasis on reusable evidence and ongoing certification responsibilities. For cloud providers, that model may place greater weight on maintaining security information as systems change. These developments seem to create a setting in which continuous security infrastructure becomes increasingly relevant to organizations pursuing federal markets.

For Mike Kim, co-founder and CEO of Mycroft, an AI-native cybersecurity services and platform company, that shift exposes an operational problem within traditional compliance work. He argues that frameworks such as CMMC and FedRAMP can become difficult for smaller organizations when teams must manually assemble evidence, maintain spreadsheets, interpret controls, and prepare for assessments while continuing to operate their businesses. “Compliance should be the byproduct of security,” Mike says. “Regulatory readiness becomes more sustainable when security activity generates the evidence required for compliance as part of normal operations.”

That philosophy may place basic security visibility ahead of documentation. Mike points to knowing which assets exist, who can access them, how systems are configured, and where vulnerabilities reside as foundational tasks beneath complex regulatory frameworks. For a smaller defense supplier or technology company without a dedicated compliance department, keeping those elements current can require significant time and specialized expertise. An infrastructure that continuously observes these conditions may therefore help connect day-to-day security work with the evidence required by federal programs.

Mike positions Mycroft’s role within that connection. Its Risk Operations Center is designed to bring together information from across an organization’s technical environment so that security conditions can be interpreted within their surrounding context. AI agents can support telemetry collection, documentation, evidence organization, and risk scoring, while domain experts remain involved in the security and compliance process. The significance of this model, according to Mike, lies in reducing the amount of manual coordination required to translate technical activity into an understandable compliance record.

That function can become particularly relevant as organizations manage several frameworks or operate across changing cloud environments. Mycroft supports programs including FedRAMP, FedRAMP 20x, CMMC, SOC 2, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, and GDPR, allowing the same underlying security information to contribute to different compliance requirements. “This is an opportunity to reduce duplicated work: the organization’s actual security environment becomes the source from which policies, evidence, risk registers, system descriptions, and other documentation can be maintained,” Mike explains.

The model also aims to address the resource imbalance that can affect smaller federal suppliers. Specialized compliance personnel, security tooling, infrastructure, and audit preparation can represent substantial costs for an organization entering a regulated market. By combining automated security operations with managed infrastructure and expert support, Mycroft seeks to make sophisticated security capabilities accessible without requiring every company to build an equivalent internal function. Mike views AI agents as an accelerant for teams, helping people spend more time on decisions that require judgment while routine collection and maintenance continue in the background.

That distinction, Mike notes, becomes important when compliance is viewed as an ongoing commercial capability. A company preparing once for an assessment may have documentation suitable for a particular point in time, while a company maintaining continuously updated security evidence can potentially demonstrate its posture as contracts, systems, vulnerabilities, and requirements evolve. In Mike’s view, that capability can influence how smaller technology companies participate in federal and other high-assurance markets, where demonstrable security may increasingly form part of commercial eligibility.

Ultimately, the federal cybersecurity landscape seems to remain in a period of adjustment, with enforcement, certification reform, and faster-moving technical risks developing simultaneously. For organizations operating within that environment, continuous visibility may become an increasingly practical foundation for meeting requirements as they change.

The resulting challenge may then be operational as much as regulatory. Security teams and federal suppliers may need systems capable of translating changing technical conditions into current evidence, giving organizations a way to maintain readiness while continuing to build, deliver, and compete in regulated markets.

<div style="display: grid;
