height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:0\">\n<p>Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is more seasoned as a banker than a politician but has shown a confident touch in standing up to US President Donald Trump and navigating a trade war that threatens his nation\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are masters in our own house,\u201d the prime minister said on Saturday, just hours after breaking off trade talks with the United States and ordering his negotiators back to Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the risks this decision poses to Canada, which is heavily dependent on exports to the US, Carney can boast of broad support, with 76 percent of the public praising his stance toward Washington, according to a weekend poll.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark Carney has the means to achieve his ambitions because the country is behind him,\u201d says Genevieve Tellier, a professor of political science at the University of Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>After Washington slapped Canada with 50-percent duties, Canada on Tuesday announced counter-tariffs of its own.<\/p>\n<p>Former head of Canada\u2019s central bank, Carney, 61, was not known for his charisma \u2014 unlike his flamboyant predecessor Justin Trudeau, from the same Liberal Party \u2014 but has nevertheless managed to kindle a patriotic flame among Canadians weary of American attacks.<\/p>\n<p>It was trade tension with the United States that propelled him to power \u2014 two months after Trump began his second term \u2014 as Canadians saw him as a protector of their economy.<\/p>\n<p>Replacing Trudeau as leader of his party and the government in March 2025, he won a general election a month later, to everyone\u2019s surprise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe transformed into a politician quite quickly; it was a surprise,\u201d said Tellier.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 The Davos Turning Point \u2013\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A blunt speech Carney gave at January\u2019s World Economic Forum marked a turning point for him on the international stage.<\/p>\n<p>Declaring that the world was in the midst of a \u201crupture in the world order,\u201d he called on middle powers like Canada to unite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re not at the table, we\u2019re on the menu,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The speech sent a message that Carney was positioning himself \u201cas an international leader with a different, credible vision,\u201d Tellier said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After studying at Harvard and Oxford, Mark Carney made his fortune as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs in New York, London, Tokyo and Toronto.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, at the height of the global financial crisis, he was appointed governor of the Bank of Canada by a conservative prime minister, Stephen Harper.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Five years later, he was chosen by a conservative British prime minister, David Cameron, to head the Bank of England, becoming the first foreigner to lead the institution.<\/p>\n<p>In this role, he would face the economic turmoil caused by Brexit, after the UK decided to leave the European Union.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Difficult phase\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Declaring Monday that \u201cAmerica has changed,\u201d the Canadian leader is moving forward with determination: seeking new trading partners, launching major projects and boosting military spending.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Carney has notably forged closer ties with the EU and is set to discuss soon the strengthening of that partnership.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Armenia in May, he emphasized that the EU and Canada were not \u201cdoomed\u201d to submit to a \u201cbrutal\u201d international order.<\/p>\n<p>Carney was born in Fort Smith, a remote town in Canada\u2019s Northwest Territories, and was raised in Edmonton, Alberta, a province rich in hydrocarbons.<\/p>\n<p>He wants to construct a new pipeline to the Pacific in order to export Canadian oil to Asia and thus reduce the need to sell to the American market.<\/p>\n<p>But by \u201cputting his foot down\u201d with Trump, Frederic Boily, a political science professor at the University of Alberta, Carney \u201cwill now enter a somewhat more difficult phase\u201d where he will have to manage the impact on Canada\u2019s economy and his popularity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
