The incident raised a key question for anyone giving AI agents access to real systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens when the agent keeps pursuing its assigned goal past the boundaries you expected it to respect?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI has now paused training of its most recent models while it adds new safeguards, with no planned date for resuming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company also said a new model, Astra, could have \u201ccritical cybersecurity capability,\u201d or the ability to carry out attacks on military or industrial systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Lehane explained to the <em>Guardian<\/em>, cyber offense capabilities are outpacing defences, and he\u2019s called on the U.S. government to come up with a set of rules for safety around the most advanced models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou would not be able to release or deploy models unless you\u2019re proving and guaranteeing a level of safety before they get out into the public,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think you have to have a national version here in the U.S. and from there, you can create an international version, because I do think, ultimately, you\u2019re going to need some type of an international structure here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, former OpenAI researcher and founder of the non-profit AI Futures Project Daniel Kokotajlo warned of the dangers of unchecked AI<em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe current AIs are dangerous in some sense, but they\u2019re nothing compared to the AIs of next year and compared to the AIs of a year later,\u201d says Kokotajlo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the UK\u2019s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), safety controls can be bypassed, lack protection in high-risk environments, and not be able to manage risk enough on their own.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NCSC recommends limiting how much they can do on their own, thinking carefully about prompts and making sure there\u2019s appropriate oversight, which will vary depending on risk tolerance. And, at the end of the day, make sure someone can still \u201cpull the plug,\u201d immediately stopping agent activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also the question of what access those agents get in the first place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizations will need to \u201ctreat every agent as a privileged identity,\u201d as agents gain access to sensitive systems and data, said Matt Hartman, former acting head of cyber at the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, to <em>The Register<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their credentials and permissions will need the same level of scrutiny as any other privileged access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue comes back to a basic deployment decision. Know what the agent can access, and make sure that access can be shut down quickly.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-final-shots\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final shots<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>OpenAI says open-source models are only a few months behind the most advanced \u2018frontier\u2019 models. New attack capabilities may spread faster than security teams are used to planning for.<\/li>\n<li>Persistent attacks leave less breathing room. Blocking one attempt doesn\u2019t mean the attacker is done.<\/li>\n<li>OpenAI has paused some training on frontier models while it works on safeguards.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
