height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:0\">\n<p>Asian stocks fluctuated Tuesday while oil edged up as investors assess a US plan for the \u201ceconomic asphyxiation\u201d of Iran, while tech firms struggled following another down day on Wall Street and ahead of earnings from chip titan Nvidia.<\/p>\n<p>With the war against Tehran now in its sixth month, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the White House was declaring an \u201ceconomic D-Day\u201d on the Islamic republic and threatened to hit countries that trade with it.<\/p>\n<p>The threat comes with talks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz stalled and neither side showing any sign of backing down \u2014 pushing oil prices up for most of August, which has in turn fanned long-term inflation fears and put pressure on bond markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAround the globe, our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone,\u201d Bessent told journalists Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to hold everyone accountable, and this is economic asphyxiation of this regime,\u201d he said, adding that countries not joining US sanctions would \u201cshare\u201d in Iran\u2019s isolation.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump was making phone calls to world leaders with requests to stop interactions with Tehran, Bessent said.<\/p>\n<p>The Treasury Department said Iran\u2019s digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and shipping sectors would be targeted for sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Both main contracts fell more than two percent Monday as Bessent\u2019s comments appeared to suggest the US will hold off military action, but they ticked higher in early Asian trade.<\/p>\n<p>His \u201cincreasingly aggressive economic campaign against Iran is designed to squeeze Tehran\u2019s access to the global financial system while keeping the pressure economic rather than allowing the market to immediately price another military escalation\u201d, wrote Stephen Innes, global strategist at Quintex Intel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now, oil appears to have heard the message that way, which is doing Washington the considerable favour of taking some inflation pressure out of the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, equities struggled as tech firms once again bore the brunt of selling, tracking a retreat in their counterparts on Wall Street.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3842648\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3842648\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3842648\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Wall-Street-NYC-\u00a9DigitalJournal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"534\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3842648\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wall Street: \u2014 \u00a9 Digital Journal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were gains in Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore and Wellington.<\/p>\n<p>The tepid performance comes ahead of much-anticipated earnings from Nvidia, which has become something of a bellwether for the AI boom.<\/p>\n<p>With vast sums lavished on artificial intelligence investment over the past two years, markets are growing increasingly nervous about whether firms can deliver results to match.<\/p>\n<p>And analysts have warned that even forecast-beating figures can sometimes not be enough.<\/p>\n<p>Charu Chanana at Saxo Markets said: \u201cInvestors are not simply asking whether Nvidia can deliver another strong quarter. They are asking whether it can deliver\u00a0enough upside to justify already-high expectations, especially with bond yields elevated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eyes will also be on other tech names\u2019 releases, including Salesforce and Marvell.<\/p>\n<p>Also in focus is this week\u2019s annual gathering of central bankers, economists and finance chiefs in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where the Federal Reserve\u2019s boss Kevin Warsh is due to speak.<\/p>\n<p>His comments will be parsed for clues about monetary policy with inflation still stubbornly high and after Bessent said the Treasury would buy back more of its own bonds to push down borrowing costs after the 30-year yield surged to a 19-year high.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian dollar edged slightly higher after retreating against the US dollar Monday as Trump vowed to double tariffs on vehicles from its neighbour, fanning a trade war.<\/p>\n<p>The US president\u2019s threat comes after the two failed Friday to reach a deal to avert new 50-percent US tariffs on select Canadian goods.
