Yet the sheer number of companies masks a market dominated by very small operators. Forbes reported that a majority of small businesses in the US operate without any employees, while 16% of small businesses have one to 19 employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The structure leaves the industry with a striking gap between its smallest businesses and its largest operators. Many companies may compete for local work while trying to build the systems and specialist capabilities required to move into a more sustainable stage of growth. The industry may not have a shortage of businesses capable of doing the work; its challenge, however, lies in how those businesses connect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That fragmentation becomes more consequential as landscape projects take on increasingly complex responsibilities. A site may be designed around stormwater management or native planting, constructed under a separate budget and eventually handed to a maintenance company with its own operating practices. Decisions made at one stage can therefore determine whether the original design continues to function years later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Price competition adds another pressure. Businesses bidding against one another can face clients armed with several cheaper quotations, creating incentives to reduce costs on work that may be difficult for the customer to assess. Much of a landscape\u2019s technical performance is hidden beneath the finished surface, including soil preparation, drainage and the construction required to support hardscape. The cheapest proposal can therefore carry costs that only emerge after installation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Angelique Robb, founder of SYNKD\u2122, argues that these pressures have created a structural problem for an industry that is increasingly important to environmental performance. She believes the sector\u2019s expertise remains divided across companies and disciplines that often work independently, limiting how effectively they can respond to changing demands around land, water and climate resilience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have over 600,000 landscaper businesses in the US,\u201d Robb says. \u201cWe have these really big companies, and we have small ones, but we have no middle. And that\u2019s not sustainable for our industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commercial strain is particularly visible among smaller operators. Robb notes that many owners enter the sector through practical work, build a customer base, and hire employees before having the opportunity to develop the business knowledge needed to manage growth. A company can generate significant revenue while its owner remains tied to day-to-day operations, unable to take time away or invest in the systems required to move forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also believes that the industry\u2019s broader problem is connected to a lack of understanding about what quality landscape work actually involves. Soil diagnostics, site conditions, drainage and underground construction can determine whether a landscape survives and performs properly, yet those elements, she argues, are rarely visible when a client compares competing quotations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her experience, the issue extends into how projects move from design to construction and eventually maintenance. Robb notes that ecological intentions can be weakened during those transitions as contractors respond to budgets or maintenance teams apply practices suited to conventional landscapes. In that process, a project designed around native plants or nature-based drainage could lose some of its intended environmental function through decisions made after the original design is complete.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stormwater management is one area where she believes the fragmented structure carries particular consequences. Robb argues that landscape professionals have knowledge of soil, planting and landform that can complement civil engineering approaches to drainage. Treating water management as the responsibility of one discipline, she says, leaves opportunities for landscape-based solutions underused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robb believes collaboration can begin without forcing companies to merge capabilities or bring every service under one roof. Smaller businesses can establish relationships with trusted specialists and subcontractors, allowing a hardscaping company, for example, to work alongside firms specializing in design or other areas of landscape construction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She argues that owners need professional peers who understand the pressures of running a small landscape company and can reinforce the decision to reject work that cannot be delivered properly at the offered price.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technology can help establish those connections, Robb says, but she does not see digital tools as the sole mechanism for changing the industry. Education, industry events and direct relationships between business owners all have a role in creating the knowledge-sharing network she believes the sector needs. SYNKD positions itself within that network by connecting businesses and creating opportunities for them to exchange expertise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stakes reach into the physical systems landscapes help support. Robb argues that the sector has a significant role in managing stormwater and building landscapes capable of performing under changing environmental conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going through a pivotal moment,\u201d Robb says. \u201cA lot of the solutions we have are through this industry.\u201d To an industry responsible for shaping how land functions over years and decades, she believes stronger connections between its businesses are becoming increasingly important to its economic and environmental performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
