When the presiding judge, Rupert Stehlin, asked the defendant if that was true, the 81-year-old nodded and said &#8220;yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> The crime took place Sept. 26, 1994, when Amy Lopez was visiting Koblenz as a tourist.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed__float-wrap\">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\" data-ads=\"{\" extrawordcount=\"\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/02\/25\/01d311b2-5e36-4813-863d-9ecbf0362e65\/thumbnail\/620x463g2\/dc3774a9fd502708a5474f4411076bac\/amy-lopez-armkettchen.jpg#\" alt=\"amy-lopez-armkettchen.jpg \" height=\"463\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/02\/25\/01d311b2-5e36-4813-863d-9ecbf0362e65\/thumbnail\/620x463g2\/dc3774a9fd502708a5474f4411076bac\/amy-lopez-armkettchen.jpg 1x, https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/02\/25\/01d311b2-5e36-4813-863d-9ecbf0362e65\/thumbnail\/1240x926g2\/4965a99a6af0aed382af3f3e7650955a\/amy-lopez-armkettchen.jpg 2x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">Amy Lopez<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                Polizei Rheinland-Pfalz<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The prosecution accuses the man, who was 49 years old at the time, of luring her under false pretenses into a secluded room of the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress in Koblenz, where he then allegedly handcuffed her, sexually assaulted her and killed her with nine knife wounds to the chest area.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The victim was strangled, struck on the head with a stone, and stabbed multiple times, ultimately resulting in his death,&#8221; the Koblenz Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office\u00a0said in a statement earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p> The suspect allegedly also strangled Lopez with a belt when she tried to defend herself and shouted, dpa reported.<\/p>\n<p> Children discovered her corpse, which was partially nude and bore severe head wounds, according to local authorities.<\/p>\n<p> The cold case remained unsolved for decades until investigators analyzed old DNA traces using new methods, ultimately leading to a breakthrough. <\/p>\n<p>Investigators re-examined Lopez&#8217;s clothing and about 1,600 samples were analyzed, the prosecutor&#8217;s office\u00a0said. In 2024, 30 years after Lopez was found,\u00a0police offered a 2,500 euro reward\u00a0for information leading to an arrest after a male DNA trace was discovered.<\/p>\n<p>More tips also came in after the case was featured on &#8220;Aktenzeichen XY,&#8221;
