Brad Cooper tried to assuage concerns about the sailors and Marines <span class=\"link\">aboard USS Abraham Lincoln<\/span> after visiting the aircraft carrier over the weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A number of <span class=\"link\">families have voiced worries<\/span> that mental health conditions on the ship are deteriorating, and there have been some complaints about sanitary conditions and food supplies during the <span class=\"link\">lengthy deployment<\/span> amid the U.S.-Iran war. A typical deployment is six months, but the service members aboard the USS Lincoln have been deployed for <span class=\"link\">nine months and counting<\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement posted to X, Cooper said deployment at sea is &#8220;uniquely challenging and tough, and every single one of us, including me, reacts to stressors in different ways.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve long believed that mental health is another aspect of individual health and requires our attention just like physical health and spiritual health,&#8221; Cooper added, without confirming or denying any specific issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-twitter-tweet embed--float-none embed--size-medium lazyload\" data-require=\"third-party\/twitter-widgets\">\n<div class=\"embed__content-wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Statement from Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander: <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VDrumI7ZPf\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/VDrumI7ZPf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 U.S. Central Command (@CENTCOM) August 16, 2026<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Military Times and Stars and \u200cStripes recently reported suicide attempts and declining morale among the ship&#8217;s thousands of sailors and Marines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jefferson Kelley, whose son, Jackson, is aboard the Lincoln, <span class=\"link\">told CBS News<\/span> the service members &#8220;should not be deployed this long.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are old ships,&#8221; he told CBS News. &#8220;It&#8217;s not like they&#8217;re even state-of-the-art. And they take a lot of maintenance, a lot of work. It&#8217;s around the clock.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A U.S. official previously told CBS News that the USS George Washington aircraft carrier is headed to the Middle East <span class=\"link\">to replace<\/span> the USS Abraham Lincoln, although that may take time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Navy has said it has not seen an increase in reported suicidal ideation or suicide attempts on board. An Aug. 3 incident in which a\u00a0sailor fell overboard\u00a0and was recovered remain under investigation, the Navy said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has described reports of the ship&#8217;s conditions as &#8220;completely misrepresented.&#8221; President Trump also disputed the concerns, saying the Lincoln&#8217;s deployment has been &#8220;not nearly long enough&#8221; when asked if the carrier has been deployed too long.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Republicans and Democrats in Congress, however, are demanding answers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>GOP Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska said on Sunday that Congress should conduct oversight of the ship&#8217;s conditions, calling for testimony from top Navy officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We should have oversight,&#8221; Bacon\u00a0<span class=\"link\">said<\/span> on &#8220;Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut sent a <span class=\"link\">letter<\/span> to Pentagon officials demanding answers and a relief plan for the sailors.
