height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:0\">\n<p>UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham called for \u201creflection\u201d Saturday after the death of Cambridge academic Jason Arday as his family denounced what they called years of harassment amid accusations of plagiarism.<\/p>\n<p>Arday, 41, was found dead Friday, just over a week after he quit as a Cambridge University professor and Jesus College fellow after both institutions announced probes into various allegations that sparked racism claims.<\/p>\n<p>In an overnight statement, his family said he had been \u201csubjected to a campaign of sustained abuse for more than three years since he accepted the role of professor at Cambridge University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others highlighted that as a man diagnosed with autism when he was a boy, he had been vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>Arday, who became Cambridge\u2019s youngest black professor in 2023, had himself alleged a \u201cracially motivated\u201d campaign against him.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters in southwest England, Burnham said it was \u201cnot a moment for any rushing to judgement\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a tragedy on so many levels, but particularly just for everybody who knew Jason, his family obviously, his friends \u2014 we think of them today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a moment for reflection \u2026 reflecting on how things came to this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scandal erupted last month after some academics and media reports accused Arday of plagiarising parts of his doctoral thesis and embellishing his life achievements.<\/p>\n<p>The allegations have been seized on by British right-wing newspapers and commentators, who claimed he unfairly benefited from diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Tragic\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>In a letter posted online when he resigned August 5, Arday said the move was \u201cthe only way\u201d to end a \u201cdifficult period\u201d, but it should not be \u201cmistaken for an acceptance of the narratives that have surrounded me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Arday was discovered unresponsive on Friday afternoon at an address in south London, according to the capital\u2019s Metropolitan Police, which has not confirmed the identity of the deceased person.<\/p>\n<p>However, within hours Cambridge University\u2019s top administrator, Vice-Chancellor Deborah Prentice, confirmed his death with a brief statement that said the prestigious British institution was \u201cdesperately saddened\u201d by the \u201ctragic news\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Police have said the death was \u201cbeing treated as unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While the circumstances of Arday\u2019s death remain unclear, police are preparing a file for a coroner, who will make a formal determination on the cause at an inquest.<\/p>\n<p>Simon Baron-Cohen, a Cambridge professor and director of the Autism Research Centre, told BBC radio that he spoke to Arday on Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was being subjected to relentless scrutiny, including ridicule, discrediting absolutely every detail of his life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t coping with the loss of his career, the loss of his reputation, and he felt he couldn\u2019t go on. He used those words in voice notes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Vulnerable\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>In their statement, his family alleged \u201cthe campaign of misinformation was too much for Jason, who was a gentle man and who always wanted to see the best in everyone\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The furore around him grew after Nathan Cofnas, a US academic and self-defined \u201crace realist\u201d \u2014 whose Cambridge research affiliation ended in 2024 amid racism accusations \u2014 published claims in July.<\/p>\n<p>The allegations included that multiple sections of Arday\u2019s doctoral dissertation were copied from other works.<\/p>\n<p>The Times, Guardian and Telegraph newspapers have published several investigative articles into Arday\u2019s academic work and personal life.<\/p>\n<p>Some of his claims about his personal life, including that he once ran 30 marathons in 35 days and raised millions for charities, were also disputed.<\/p>\n<p>Diagnosed with autism, Arday says he was non-verbal until age 11 and only learnt to read and write at 18, before becoming Cambridge\u2019s professor of sociology of education at 37.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Times earlier this month, Arday admitted making academic \u201cmistakes\u201d but said he was being wrongly \u201cportrayed to be a liar and a fantasist and an academic fraud\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that some errors in his early academic work were because of his autism, as he relied on using mimicry to understand information.<\/p>\n<p>Baron-Cohen told the BBC: \u201cAt the heart of all of this was a man who\u2019d been diagnosed in childhood with disabilities that included autism and language delay and learning differences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a vulnerable child, a vulnerable teenager, and a vulnerable adult, so he needed and deserved safeguarding and support.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
