Gavin Newsom\u2019s disgraced former chief of staff Dana Williamson has broken her silence as she prepares for court on criminal charges involving alleged tax fraud and a plot to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m recovering,\u201d Williamson told the California Post from her home on Friday, referencing a liver transplant she underwent earlier this year that has caused delays in her case.<\/p>\n<p>She declined to comment further before closing the door.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Dana Williamson spotted outside her residence about 10 miles from California\u2019s state capital Sacramento. <span class=\"credit\">David McGlynn for CA Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Federal prosecutors alleged in a 23-count indictment filed in November that Williamson was part of a scheme to steal roughly $225,000 from a dormant campaign account tied to former US Health Secretary Xavier Becerra, who\u2019s now running for California governor.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors say the money was routed through consulting entities and disguised as legitimate payments.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Williamson, who was Newsom\u2019s top aide from 2022 until December 2024, allegedly collaborated during this time with registered lobbyist Greg Campbell and Sean McCluskie, a former Becerra staffer. Both men have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Williamson, the governor\u2019s former right hand, is also accused of filing false tax returns that claimed more than $1.7 million in business expenses.<\/p>\n<p>In her 2022 tax return, Williamson allegedly made $861,000 in false business deductions. The actual expenses involved a $156,000 birthday trip to Mexico, including a yacht rental; more than $12,000 on Chanel earrings and a shopping bag; and nearly $8,000 on a Gucci bag and wallet, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Williamson is accused of stealing campaign money and lying about business expenses. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Williamson is recovering a liver transplant she underwent earlier this year that has caused delays in her case. <span class=\"credit\">David McGlynn for CA Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Williamson also allegedly spent more than $10,000 on a trip to a California theme park and more than $35,000 on a family law attorney.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She had almost $700,000 in false business deductions for her 2023 tax return, according to the indictment, including $213,000 in payments to two relatives for \u201cno-show\u201d jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Assemblymember David Tangipa (R-Fresno) suggested the allegations against Williamson and her co-conspirators show how \u201cSacramento is pervaded by a culture of corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Gov. Gavin Newsom publicly praised Williamson despite knowing she was under investigation by the FBI. <span class=\"credit\">Anadolu via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Following her arrest, Newsom told KCRA he was \u201cstill processing\u201d the allegations against Williamson, and he initially wondered if the arrest was politicized by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had been made aware of an FBI probe looking into Williamson late last year and placed her on leave.<\/p>\n<p>However, Politico noted in a report that Newsom praised Williamson\u2019s \u201cinsight, tenacity, and big heart\u201d in a send-off message, making no mention of the FBI probe.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Williamson served as the right hand of Gov.
