She failed our family. She failed thousands of families in the same situation because this happens every day in LA,\u201d Salinas continued. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen several homes, businesses, people\u2019s cars that end up being lit up by homeless people. It\u2019s terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Salinas recalled that Bass visited the church where her uncle works as a pastor several months ago to ask the community for help in cleaning up local streets. But \u201cit was not our responsibility \u2014 it was her responsibility,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s her duty to keep the city clean. Our church helped clean the city for her. And yet she doesn\u2019t even give us a call back and respond to this matter. It\u2019s really sad,\u201d Salinas added.<\/p>\n<p>The couple lost their three dogs: 8-year-old poodle mix Charlie, 3-year-old Chihuahua-mix Firulais, and 10-year-old Husky Chase, who died later at the hospital. They were able to save their other three dogs, all Huskies, from the fire.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Three of the family\u2019s dogs died. <span class=\"credit\">GoFundMe<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>One of the couple\u2019s sons, Jonathan Galicia, with their since passed-away dog Chase. <span class=\"credit\">GoFundMe<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Umana said the couple tragically \u201clost everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have anything any more,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said her husband, a pastor and a construction worker, saw \u201c30 years of sacrifice and work\u201d go up in smoke in a matter of moments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s destroyed,\u201d she said of Galicia. \u201cHe\u2019s super sad and devastated. He\u2019s in shock.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The burnt remains of the Galicia home. <span class=\"credit\">Carlin Stiehl for CA Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Trash lays on the ground of the adjacent property to the Galicia home that caught fire while squatters were living on site in Larchmont. <span class=\"credit\">Carlin Stiehl for CA Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a statement, Bass\u2019s office said she has been successful in fighting homelessness across the city.    <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel for this family, but it\u2019s Mayor Bass who finally brought homelessness down in LA after years and years of increases before she took office,\u201d it read. \u201cWe have a long way to go, and Mayor Bass will keep fighting against the special interests and politicians who want to hit the \u2018pause\u2019 button on reducing street homelessness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The family tried to warn the city about the squatters, who allegedly lit the fire that spread to their home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [LAPD] said the squatters don\u2019t have a criminal record so they couldn\u2019t arrest them,\u201d Umana said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass speaks to reporters. <span class=\"credit\">Ringo Chiu for CA Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The group of up to eight squatters, both men and women in their 30s and 40s, started living in the empty home next to the family a year and a half ago.<\/p>\n<p>Salinas said they complained to the police \u201chundreds of times,\u201d and they showed up \u201cmaybe\u201d once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said the squatters weren\u2019t committing any crimes so they couldn\u2019t arrest them and that they were just looking for a place to stay.
