It is not quite a salary comparison site, though it prices your pay. It is not quite a robo-adviser, though it grades, and then upgrades your portfolio. It is not a job board, a budgeting app, or a brokerage. The company is betting that the absence of a tidy label is the point, because it is trying to stand up a product category that did not exist before it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That bet comes from two people with a history of building categories. Lossdog is the third company from Tom Sosnoff and Scott Sheridan, who built thinkorswim, the options brokerage TD Ameritrade acquired in 2009, and later tastytrade, sold to IG Group in 2021 for a reported $1.1 billion. Each time, they took an analysis that only institutions could run and handed it to individuals, and each time, a new category formed around the result. Lossdog is the same move aimed at a bigger target: not how you trade, but what you are worth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pitch is a single engine that prices two things most people track separately, if at all. On one side, it reads a resume against government wage data and returns a figure for what a U.S. professional\u2019s labor is worth in their market. On the other, it grades an investment portfolio against a benchmark and estimates what an average approach is costing over a lifetime. Salary sites such as Glassdoor and Levels.fyi handle the first in broad ranges. Portfolio trackers handle the second. What has not existed is one place that treats a person\u2019s paycheck and their portfolio as two readings of the same question: how much wealth are you actually building, and how much are you leaving on the table?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sosnoff traces the idea to a single observation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe genesis behind Lossdog was that most people are underpaid, and most executives are overpaid. People don\u2019t optimize their portfolios, and they don\u2019t optimize their wealth creation. My goal was to create software to help change that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-why-no-one-has-built-it-before\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why no one has built it before<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason the category is empty is not that the idea is new. It is that the data was one-sided. Employers have long priced labor precisely, buying proprietary compensation surveys from firms such as Mercer and Korn Ferry. Individuals were left with anecdote and crowdsourced ranges. The same asymmetry ran through investing, where institutions carried real-time analytics and retail savers carried a rough sense that things were fine. Building a consumer product on the other side of that gap required current, granular data and a willingness to hand it to people who were never meant to have it. That is precisely the seam the founders have worked their whole careers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also why the founder story is not decoration here. A category-defining product has to be believed before it can be used, and belief is easier to extend to two people who already turned retail options analysis into a business twice. The track record is the argument that this is a real category and not a feature in search of one.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-whether-the-label-sticks\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Whether the label sticks<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The open question is whether \u201cknow your total worth\u201d is a durable product category or a framing that dissolves on contact. The honest caveats are in plain view. The figure Lossdog returns is a modeled estimate, not a guaranteed valuation, and it is only as good as the data behind it. The company is early, a few months into a public launch, and a category is not real until people keep coming back to it. Plenty of fintech products have named a category, gathered a launch crowd, and then found that users did not have the recurring problem the pitch assumed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What Lossdog has going for it is that the underlying problem is recurring by nature. A salary is renegotiated every few years; a portfolio drifts continuously. Both are questions people answer badly and repeatedly, and both are now questions a single subscription proposes to settle with a number instead of a feeling. Whether that becomes a category others rush to copy, or a clever product ahead of its demand is the bet Sosnoff and Sheridan are making a third time.
