Faster mobile broadband, autonomous systems, smart factories, connected healthcare, artificial intelligence (AI), and edge computing have all featured prominently in discussions about the future of digital connectivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, as the industry enters the era of <strong>5G-Advanced<\/strong>, attention is increasingly focused on what new wireless capabilities can deliver. Yet there is a less visible technology that may ultimately determine whether these ambitions succeed at scale: fibre-optic infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While consumers often associate 5G with towers, smartphones, and radio signals, the reality is that every advanced wireless service relies on a robust transport network beneath it. As mobile operators prepare for rapidly rising traffic volumes and growing enterprise demand, fibre is emerging as the critical foundation supporting next-generation connectivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Ericsson\u2019s June 2026 Mobility Report, global 5G subscriptions reached <strong>3.1 billion during the first quarter of 2026<\/strong>, with 162 million new subscriptions added in just three months. The report also found that mobile network traffic grew by <strong>22 percent year-over-year<\/strong>, highlighting the growing strain on telecommunications infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The growth is being driven by several developments occurring simultaneously, including the expansion of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and AI-powered applications, together with edge computing deployments. For operators, these developments present both an opportunity and a challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While wireless technology continues to advance, every gigabyte transferred over a mobile network must eventually travel through fibre-connected transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-why-5g-advanced-changes-the-equation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why 5G-Advanced changes the equation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">5G-Advanced represents more than an incremental upgrade. The technology is expected to enhance network performance while supporting AI-enabled services, industrial automation, ultra-reliable connectivity, and more sophisticated network slicing capabilities. Ericsson notes that commercial offerings based on 5G Standalone network slicing continue to increase globally, as operators seek new enterprise revenue streams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, achieving these capabilities requires increasingly distributed network architectures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional mobile networks concentrated much of their intelligence in a central core. Modern networks increasingly distribute computing resources closer to end users through edge computing infrastructure. This reduces latency but creates far more locations that must be interconnected. Every new radio site, edge facility, data centre, and network function requires high-capacity transport links. In most cases, fibre remains the preferred solution.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-canada-s-unique-connectivity-challenge\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Canada\u2019s unique connectivity challenge<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Canada, the issue has particular significance. Canada possesses one of the largest geographic territories in the world while maintaining a relatively small and highly dispersed population. This creates unique economic pressures for telecommunications providers. In addition, Canada\u2019s ambitions around artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, smart cities, healthcare innovation, and digital government all depend upon resilient connectivity infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Major urban regions such as Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, and Ottawa continue to experience rising demand for high-capacity connectivity. At the same time, governments and industry remain committed to improving broadband access in rural and remote communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Programs such as Canada\u2019s Universal Broadband Fund have sought to expand connectivity across underserved regions, while telecommunications providers continue investing in fibre networks nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenge is that 5G expansion cannot occur independently of transport infrastructure investments. A mobile tower serving a remote community is only as effective as its connection to the broader network. Increasingly, that means fibre backhaul.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most promising opportunities in Canada\u2019s broadband strategy is Fixed Wireless Access. FWA uses mobile network technology to deliver home and business internet connectivity, particularly in areas where traditional wired broadband may be difficult or expensive to deploy. Ericsson reports continued momentum behind 5G-based FWA globally, particularly in markets such as North America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Canada, this technology offers a potentially cost-effective method of extending high-speed internet access into rural regions. However, there is an important irony. Although FWA appears wireless from the customer\u2019s perspective, much of its performance depends on fibre connections behind the scenes. Without sufficient fibre capacity connecting towers to the operator\u2019s core network, FWA performance can deteriorate as demand grows. This means that wireless expansion and fibre deployment increasingly need to be viewed as complementary rather than competing investments.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-ai-is-creating-new-network-demands\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI is creating new network demands<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another emerging factor is artificial intelligence. AI applications are increasingly moving beyond centralized cloud environments. New workloads are being distributed across devices, industrial facilities, vehicles, and edge computing infrastructure. Ericsson predicts that future \u201cphysical AI\u201d applications will create new traffic patterns as autonomous systems become more widespread.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Canadian businesses, this could include smart manufacturing systems, autonomous mining operations, a precision agriculture. Many of these applications require low latency, high reliability, and substantial upstream as well as downstream data capacity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Historically, most network traffic flowed toward consumers. Increasingly, devices are also generating large volumes of data for AI analysis and machine-to-machine communications.
