Employees are expected not only to perform well but also to demonstrate their value through LinkedIn updates, personal branding, online networking, and a constant stream of visible activity. While visibility can create career opportunities, new research suggests it may be coming at an unexpected cost: the time available for learning and professional development.

According to research from MyIQ involving 11,742 adults, workers now spend a median of four hours per week managing their professional reputation, compared with just 2.5 hours on structured skill development. The findings point to a growing imbalance in how professionals allocate their time and attention. Moreover, 68 percent of respondents said they spend more time thinking about how their work appears to others than they did five years ago, while 61 percent reported postponing learning activities because of pressure to maintain an online presence. Nearly half worry that remaining quiet professionally could make them appear less accomplished.

As Sarah Meyer, Managing Director of MyIQ, observes: “Visibility was once a by-product of good work. Increasingly, it is treated as proof that good work is happening at all.”

The rise of performative professionalism

The modern workplace has become deeply intertwined with digital communication platforms. Professional networking sites, collaboration tools, social media channels, and virtual work environments have blurred the line between accomplishing work and demonstrating work.

In theory, increased visibility can be beneficial. Employees who share expertise, contribute to professional discussions, and engage with industry communities often expand their networks and create new opportunities. Organizations likewise benefit when employees act as knowledgeable ambassadors.

The difficulty arises when visibility evolves from a useful professional activity into a primary indicator of competence. Many employees increasingly feel pressure to curate a professional identity that is constantly active, responsive, and publicly engaged. The concern is that accomplishments no longer speak for themselves. Instead, workers believe they must continuously showcase achievements to remain relevant in a competitive labour market.

This phenomenon is particularly pronounced among knowledge workers, where outputs may be less visible than those produced in traditional operational roles. A software developer, data scientist, regulatory specialist, or researcher may spend weeks solving complex problems, yet receive less recognition than someone posting daily updates about their professional activities.

The learning opportunity cost

The MyIQ findings raise an important question: what happens when personal promotion consumes time previously devoted to developing expertise?

Learning remains one of the most critical assets in today’s economy. The acceleration of artificial intelligence, automation, cybersecurity requirements, and digital transformation means workers must continually refresh their knowledge to remain competitive.

The World Economic Forum has repeatedly highlighted reskilling and upskilling as essential workforce priorities. At the same time, employers continue to seek workers who can combine technical competence with adaptability and continuous learning.

Yet if professionals are spending significantly more time cultivating visibility than acquiring new knowledge, a long-term capability gap could emerge.

A professional who spends hours each week refining online profiles, preparing posts, monitoring engagement metrics, and maintaining digital presence may gain short-term visibility. However, that same individual may lose opportunities to master emerging technologies, earn certifications, or deepen subject matter expertise.

Artificial intelligence is further amplifying the challenge. AI tools have dramatically reduced the effort required to create content. LinkedIn posts, blog articles, presentation materials, professional summaries, and networking messages can now be generated in minutes rather than hours.

While this increases productivity, it also contributes to a growing volume of professional content competing for attention. As more individuals publish more frequently, maintaining visibility becomes increasingly difficult. The result resembles an “attention arms race.” When everyone can create content effortlessly, workers feel compelled to create even more content to remain visible. Ironically, the same technologies that promise efficiency may increase pressures around professional self-promotion.

At the same time, organizations are recognizing that AI implementation requires genuine expertise, not simply visibility. Across industries, employers are seeking professionals who understand data, governance, risk management, automation, compliance, and digital systems. These capabilities are developed through education, experience, and practice rather than online engagement alone.

There is an important distinction between visibility and credibility. Visibility can attract attention. Credibility sustains trust.

A professional may have a large audience yet possess limited expertise. Conversely, highly skilled individuals often maintain modest online profiles while delivering exceptional value within their organizations.

Historically, credibility was earned through demonstrated competence, successful projects, professional qualifications, and peer recognition. While these factors remain important, digital platforms have altered perceptions of achievement.

Recruiters, employers, and clients increasingly encounter individuals first through online channels. This creates incentives to invest in personal branding. The danger lies in overestimating its importance.

The most successful professionals often balance external visibility with substantive expertise. They use visibility to communicate knowledge rather than substitute for it.

Organizations also have a role to play. If employees feel compelled to spend significant time proving their value externally, leaders should consider whether internal recognition systems are functioning effectively. Employees who receive meaningful feedback, development opportunities, and recognition are generally less dependent on external validation.

Companies should also encourage continuous learning by protecting time for training and development. The long-term value of workforce capability far exceeds short-term gains from personal branding activity. Investment in employee learning can support innovation, resilience, and adaptability, particularly as AI continues to reshape job requirements across sectors.

<div style="display: grid;
