Alongside enthusiasm for AI\u2019s capabilities has come a growing concern: its appetite for energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Media headlines frequently warn that AI systems require vast amounts of electricity, that data centres are consuming increasing quantities of power, and that the technology could undermine global efforts to combat climate change. Yet a new study suggests that the reality may be more nuanced. While AI undoubtedly consumes significant energy, its overall contribution to greenhouse gas emissions appears surprisingly modest when measured against the scale of the entire economy. Moreover, AI may ultimately contribute more to climate solutions than to climate problems. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-separating-perception-from-reality\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Separating perception from reality<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concern surrounding AI\u2019s environmental footprint is understandable. Training large language models and operating AI inference systems require substantial computing infrastructure. These systems depend upon vast networks of servers housed in energy-intensive data centres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, researchers from the University of Waterloo and the Georgia Institute of Technology found that even under scenarios of increasing AI adoption, the technology\u2019s overall impact on U.S. national energy consumption and carbon emissions remains relatively small. Their findings were published in the journal <em>Environmental Research Letters<\/em> in a paper titled <em>\u201cWatts and Bots: The Energy Implications of AI Adoption.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers combined economic activity data with estimates of AI adoption across occupations and industrial sectors. Their objective was to assess how widespread AI implementation might affect energy demand and associated carbon dioxide emissions across the economy. Their analysis concluded that AI adoption could increase annual U.S. energy use by approximately 28 petajoules and add around 896 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. While those figures may sound substantial, they represent only about 0.03 percent of national energy consumption and approximately 0.02 percent of annual U.S. carbon dioxide emissions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These findings challenge the narrative that AI will become a major driver of global climate change. One of the main observations from the research is that AI-related electricity consumption in the U.S. is roughly comparable to the total energy consumption of Iceland. Although that comparison highlights the scale of AI infrastructure, the researchers argue that the effect remains relatively insignificant when viewed against the backdrop of the entire U.S. economy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is particularly notable given that the U.S. economy remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels. According to data referenced by the researchers, approximately 83 percent of U.S. energy consumption still derives from petroleum, coal and natural gas. Since these fuel sources generate greenhouse gases during combustion, any increase in electricity demand has the potential to increase emissions.  Yet even within this fossil-fuel-dependent system, AI\u2019s contribution to additional emissions remains proportionally very small.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-why-local-impacts-matter\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why local impacts matter<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study does not suggest that AI\u2019s energy demand is irrelevant. Instead, it highlights an important distinction between global and local effects. Dr Juan Moreno-Cruz, professor in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo and Canada Research Chair in Energy Transitions, notes that the burden of supporting AI infrastructure is unlikely to be distributed evenly. Regions hosting major data centres could experience substantial increases in electricity generation requirements. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a critical consideration because data centres tend to cluster geographically. Communities located near large-scale computing facilities may experience increased pressure on electricity grids, greater infrastructure investment requirements, and potentially higher emissions depending on the local energy mix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cases, electricity production and associated emissions could increase significantly in specific regions even if the broader national impact remains negligible. This introduces a new challenge for policymakers. Climate effects may be modest at a global level, but local environmental and infrastructure consequences could still require careful management. The finding mirrors broader trends in technology deployment, where benefits are often distributed widely while burdens can become concentrated in particular locations.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-ai-as-an-environmental-enabler\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI as an environmental enabler<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the research concerns the potential upside of AI. Public discussions often focus on the energy required to run AI models. Far less attention is paid to the possibility that AI could accelerate the development of technologies that reduce emissions elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers argue that AI may help optimise industrial processes, improve energy efficiency, enhance renewable energy integration, and accelerate scientific discovery. This perspective reflects a growing body of research suggesting that AI can support climate mitigation efforts. Examples include optimising electricity grid operations, improving forecasting for wind and solar generation, enhancing battery design and energy storage technologies, and accelerating materials discovery for low-carbon manufacturing. In these applications, AI serves not merely as a consumer of electricity but as a tool capable of reducing energy consumption elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreno-Cruz argues that concerns about AI\u2019s climate impact should therefore be balanced against its potential contribution to green innovation. Rather than viewing AI solely as a source of emissions, it may be more accurate to regard it as a platform technology capable of helping societies achieve environmental objectives. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study arrives at an important moment in discussions surrounding AI governance. Governments around the world are investing heavily in AI infrastructure while simultaneously pursuing ambitious decarbonisation targets. In some policy debates, AI\u2019s energy requirements have been portrayed as fundamentally incompatible with climate goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new findings suggest this perspective may be overstated. Instead, the environmental consequences of AI appear likely to depend more on how electricity is generated rather than on AI itself. If future data centres are powered increasingly by renewable energy, nuclear power, or other low-carbon energy sources, the carbon footprint of AI could fall even as overall computational capacity expands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, investment in more efficient chips, improved cooling technologies, and smarter data centre operations continues to reduce the energy required for AI workloads. Consequently, the future climate impact of AI may be influenced as much by energy policy and infrastructure choices as by advances in machine learning algorithms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should be factored in that energy systems vary dramatically between countries. For example, countries with highly renewable electricity systems may experience lower emissions impacts from AI adoption. Conversely, regions that remain heavily dependent on coal-fired power generation could see greater climate consequences from expanding AI infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognising this, the research team intends to expand its analysis internationally to explore how AI adoption may affect energy use and emissions across different economic and energy-system contexts.
